Rapist kills man who helped victim

2011-11-29 11:01

Pietermaritzburg - A young man who was brave enough to help a 15-year-old girl who was being raped by two men has paid with his life.

As Sanele Dladla, 23, was walking with the victim to the police station the morning after rescuing her, one of the rapists confronted them in the street and stabbed Dladla to death.

The rape took place in a dilapidated back room at Dladla’s home in Mbali Unit 1.

Dladla was returning home with a friend at about 03:00 on Saturday when he heard screams.

His eldest sister, Zamampendle, said the two friends went to investigate and found two men they knew raping the girl.

Commotion

“I heard some commotion and on investigating I discovered that the two were confronting the suspects for raping the girl and Sanele said he would report the matter.

“I went back into the house and I heard the woman who stays in the main house scolding the suspects for committing the crime in her yard,” said Zamampendle.

She said they kept the teenage victim in their home until sunrise, with Sanele saying he would accompany her to the police.

The girl said she was grabbed by the suspects on her way to buy pre-paid electricity from a local shop.

“When we questioned the girl she said the two started raping her on Friday afternoon in a nearby bush after taking the cash she had and the electricity pre-paid card. She said that in the late afternoon they dragged her into that back room at the neighbours.

“When we questioned the neighbour it appeared that the screams of the girl could not have been heard as there was a party in the neighbourhood,” she said.

Stabbed

At about 06:00 Sanele accompanied the girl to the police. On their way they were intercepted by the suspects and one of them stabbed him in the chest. He was taken to Mbali Clinic where he died.

“I was cleaning the house when Sanele’s friend came and told me that he was stabbed,” said Zamampendle.

“The girl escaped and went to the police station while this was happening. It is sad that my brother could die this way. He was no trouble maker and even now he died trying to help the poor girl.”

On Saturday afternoon local people went looking for the suspects. They found one and beat him up before calling the ward councillor and the police.

The one who allegedly stabbed Sanele was still at large until his parents tracked him down and handed him to the police.

The Witness could not find the rape victim or her family.

Ward councillor Siphiwo Ndawonde said, “Rape is not common in this community.

“It is so sad for a young life to be lost while trying to do the right thing, to rescue a vulnerable young girl.”

He said he will call a meeting to discuss the events.

16 Days of Activism campaign

The young girl was raped the day after the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children.

Last Friday the Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Lulu Xingwana, said that there has been an increase in all sexual offences, including rape and indecent assault, since last year.

She said she believes people who rape and murder women and children should not be have option of bail, but should be given tougher sentences to deter others.

Police said the two suspects, who are in their 20s, will appear in court soon.

One is charged with rape and the other with rape and murder

Well done to the community! Should have castrated them all right then and there. Condolences to the boys family for your loss, he was a brave man! We need more people like that in our country.

      jordaanjean - 2011-11-29 14:25

@Monique .. I would just like to know what kind of animal would think your comment deserves a thumbs down ?? Really ?

      Joanne - 2011-11-29 15:23

no female in SA should walk anywhere on her own, and when reporting a rape should go in a group of more than four people. And what a loss to SA, this young man. There is a proverb that says: "Whoever destroys a soul, it is considered as if he destroyed an entire world. And whoever saves a life, it is considered as if he saved an entire world."

      barry.mcbride - 2011-11-29 15:58

@jordaanjean: Why do you think? It’s obviously due to the illegality of ‘giving absolute power to the community’ or ‘guilty before proven’ or ‘two wrongs make a right’ or suggesting punishment that is clearly unconstitutional. Try imagining the anarchy if such were the case and how many innocent lives would be lost to say the very least.

      Riëtte - 2011-11-29 16:30

@ bmcb, it's obvious you have no idea how disgusting a rape is, and if your wife, daughter, sister or mother gets raped so viciously and the guy who saves her gets killed for it, don't make comments such as this. Women live in fear every damn day of being raped, and the pigs get away with it, well, for once, the bastard got a good thrashing, he deserved nothing less!

      barry.mcbride - 2011-11-29 16:58

@Riëtte: I didn’t say anything about this story or how horrendous rape truly is, but just answered jordaanjean as to why Monique may have got “thumbs down” for her comment. Allowing the community free-will isn’t an option, no matter what be the crime.

As bad as this story sounds it should give us at least a bit of hope. from what I can read in the story is that the community has a very low tolerance for crime. First the lady who owns the property scolded the suspects for committing the crime on her property, then the the deceased and his friend went to intervene and report the case to the police. After he was killed community members made a citizens arrest of the one suspect whilst the parents of the other suspect handed him over. This shows a clear dedication on the part of the community to rid their area of crime. The problem however is that with such a lack of resources they cannot take further steps to safeguard themselves and thus remain victims. The local councilor should really look into this as the dedication is there, all they need now is resources and organisation

Jail sentence might work in other countries, but not in S.A. It does not serve as a warning to others. Please think of something better or let them do hard labour while serving.

      ivan.coetzee2 - 2011-11-29 12:15

In Jail u get free clothing, water n lights, meals, entertainment, option to have free education, roof over your head, bed to sleep on, some work to keep you busy and time on hand to read if you choose. How the hell can that be a deterrent?

      Device - 2011-11-29 15:07

@ivan.coetzee2 jails in SA are no walk in the park. Remember that in prisons such as pollsmoor water, meals, entertainment etc. are only afforded to you if you have good standing with the ruling gangs since they control most of these things. as for the free education many of the prisoners are products of free education in the first place. This education has not equipped them with the necessary skills to do something positive instead of crime. In prison you can read if you choose to but you can also get sodomised whether you choose to or not. So the question is why would people continue going to prison despite this? I think the answer lies in the desperate conditions that many young men endure outside of prison. I don't care how easy or tough we make prisons; as long as SA continues to produce a bunch of frustrated, unemployed and poorly educated young men there shall be no peace for all of us in this country and the prisons shall remain full regardless of what horrors await them inside.

Bring back the death penalty. All good to say everybody has the right to life but what about those who lose their lives because of crime. Did they not have a right to be protected and to live. Why should one respect the right to live of those who do not have the same respect. Only way to stop or at least limit crime including corruption is to deter people through extremely harsh penalties. It is simple. Criminals weigh up the risk of being caught and the penalty associated with it to the potential benefit of committing the crime. To make it less attractive on the risk side will reduce crime.

I will never understand what possible gratification anybody could ever find from raping a person. And then to be a murderer on top of that? What kind of person do you have to be to be that depraved? Is such a person even worthy of the title "human being?". It is such a sad and scary world that we live in that so called "people" have no qualms in robbing a person of their safety and ending another's life for no reason at all and for what "Sexual Gratification". Sanele: the world needs more people like you.... people that still believe in kindness first and foremost!!!

When OH WHEN will something be done to rapists?

      Riëtte - 2011-11-29 16:40

Rapists are getting away with it daily while their victims never recover, the only thing to be done is to rape the rapist, let them experience the humiliation and fear. But that will NEVER happen, because criminals have more rights than the law abiding citizens.

Nice one Sanele. Glad to see there's still heroes left. Now it's the victim's turn to step up to the plate and not let his death be in vain...

A tragedy and even more tragic because tomorrow it won't be news any more. In most other countries this would be the stuff of a crime novel - here we live it almost every day.

Community LAW = CUT IT OFF. The justice system takes too long, and costs too much. They are guily, obviously, and deserve no mercy.

MWF that blanket comment just deserves a thumbs down. What do you mean uncivilised? Who? The man who was helping her, the girl herself, or the neighbours who beat the murderers up. If you have no point to make please don't make it here.
