Cape Town - Former gang leader Rashied Staggie has been released from Pollsmoor Prison on day parole, according to reports.

Eyewitness News reported on Monday morning that Staggie was seen leaving the prison accompanied by his family and Kenny Kunene.

According to EWN, Kunene said he is a friend of Staggie, and that he believes Staggie has changed.

The former Hard Livings gang boss will be free to move about during the day, but must return to Pollsmoor Prison at night. He will be monitored at all times by an electronic tracking device.

The Cape Times reported that Staggie will return to Manenberg, where the Manenberg Community Police Forum will keep a watchful eye on him, amid concerns over a potential increase in gang violence.

Staggie was released after serving two-thirds of the sentence he received after ordering the gang-rape of a 17-year-old girl and robbing a police armoury. He will be granted full parole in March 2014.
