Johannesburg - Former Hyundai boss Billy Rautenbach faces a civil claim involving tens of millions of US dollars, The Star reported on Friday.
The claim was brought under the Companies Act, which states that company directors who act recklessly can be held personally liable for their negligence.
Rautenbach was served the papers, to appear in court in January, after testifying at the corruption trial of former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi on Thursday.
He left the country in 1999 after the collapse of Hyundai Motor Distributors in Botswana.
He recently reached a R40 million plea agreement with the authorities on 326 charges of fraud.
He is also a major shareholder in the Central African Mining and Exploration Company.
The case is not related to the Selebi trial, his spokeswoman Madelein Roscher said on Thursday.
Beeld reported the lawyer handling the matter, Pierre Burger, said they had no option other than to serve the papers while he was at the court.
Roscher said it was related to the affairs of the Hyundai group.
