Johannesburg - Rea Vaya lost a bid in the Labour Court in Johannesburg on Monday to stop its bus drivers from striking, bus operator Piotrans said.

"Management has called an urgent meeting to decide what our next step will be," spokesperson Eric Motshwane said.

Striking Rea Vaya bus drivers want their salaries tripled from R5 000 to R15 000. They also insist on medical aid and a pension fund. The strike began on August 1.

Motshwane said 20 employees were dismissed after they failed to report for work on August 8.

No violence or intimidation had been reported so far.

I do agree that with the responsibilities that these drivers have that R5000 per month is far too little. Pre 1994. when the JMT operated in JHB. bus/tram drivers received an adequate salary commensurate with their responsibilities and they received a municipal pension - medical aid, I seem to remember, was optional, because the Provincial Hospital setup then used to work very well - and we are talking multi-racial drivers here too (for those who live by their race card arguments).

"Striking Rea Vaya bus drivers want their salaries tripled from R5 000 to R15 000." Now you will see them running to be bus drivers. lol

Always knew it was a bad idea to form an alliance with the TAXI drivers - and THEY are the ones who want to run an Airline? Ha Ha Ha - They will never get past 1st base if Rea Vaya is the example.

How the hell are they goingto maintain aircraft hen they cant even maintain taxis?

Hell - would be cheaper for RV to hire a full extra complement of drivers than to pay these guys triple. I'd investigate the feasibility of that, then retrench them in phases over the next year. Every month select the bottom % of performers and give them notice. Keep the remaining staff on hand for R6500/month. Cheaper than the ludicrous triple pay request.

man o man too much chiefs and too little indians so its a more advance job to drive a red rea via bus than the normal busses and one of these days they will demand a 30hours week or just sit at home and get paid much easier
