Record tax returns filed

2012-01-29 14:36

Johannesburg - Over four million tax returns had been filed with the SA Revenue Service by Thursday last week for the 2010/11 tax season, the highest number in the country's history.

The 4 010 980 returns were filed by individuals, trusts and provisional taxpayers, Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay said in a statement on Sunday.

"At the corresponding time for the 2010 tax season, Sars had received 3 523 707 returns... a 13.8% increase in the number of returns submitted."

Provisional taxpayers - individuals with additional sources of income like investment income or trading income from operating a business - still had until midnight on Tuesday January 31 to submit returns electronically.

what happened to the other +/- 20 million potential tax payers??

      Francois - 2012-01-29 15:08

Below a certain income, you don't need to fill in a tax return. I think this a typical of government - they give the wrong spin on information and then blame the media for it or maybe it is the media who know that people like Ray and Newsreader are going to react that way - which they are entitled to under the freedom of expression guarantee in the Bill of Rights. Maybe it would have been better state the number of people working in SA that is on the PAYE system and how many need to file a tax return and how many did. Maybe SARS can also tell us how much the average taxi owner pays -then you are not divulging personal information, but also stating your efficiency in getting tax from the informal sector. I think to balance there scales, taxis must pay more than the normal road user in tolls (once the roads are finished) and they should not get a fuel discount, but should also pay an additional charge until they have paid all their taxes. Taxes for taxis - viva Prahvin.

many are holding SA passports and are living and working abroad .

      sikhumbuzok - 2012-01-29 16:38

@Francois speaking from experience the taxi industry doesnt make as much money as ppl think it does. The reason so many taxis are old and in poor shape is because the owner does not have the money to replace the taxi. Fuel expenditure takes over 50% of your sales, then you have maintenance which if you do local (short distance routes) hammers you financially. Most guys in Jhb alone dont even make R400 per day. So go figure how much tax those guys will pay.

4 million tax payers looking after 40 million people and 40 thousand mp's Makes you think

      Jarryd - 2012-01-29 15:12

      50* million now

      str4f3 - 2012-01-30 08:17

it wasn't 4 million people. it was 4 million people, and companies, and other corporate entities. So probably about 3 million real people. If our dear government was serious about making a few million jobs, do they realize how much easier it would be to do their jobs? With that amount of extra tax money, we might even be able to afford this ridiculous welfare state they are attempting.

  • Trevor - 2012-01-29 14:56

So, we pay MORE taxes every year, local and national AND SARS has a recored filing of taxes YET, the ANC STILL wants more...sorry wants to STEAL more...

  • pietopper - 2012-01-29 14:59

So....approximately 8% of the population filed a tax return.

      Newsreader - 2012-01-29 15:11

No! ...approximately 80% of the white population filed a tax return!

  • Shahied - 2012-01-29 15:14

Abour right supporting 40 million...you had the cream during Apartheid...now is time to "K.K EN BETAAL" ...Ha..Ha..Ha...

      nerasmus1 - 2012-01-29 15:40

Awe, would you like free chips with your free sandwich, sir. Idiot, half of that 4 million wasn't even born yet during apartheid and by the sound of it, neither were you.

  • thomas.robbertse - 2012-01-29 15:59

..... So Mr Adrian Lackay, as the spokes person of SARS, will you also tell us, (the 4million diligent and honest taxpayers), how and what are you going to do to get the other +/- 20 million ( not so diligent) people to comply with the tax laws of our beloved country? You owe us this for good behavior at least ! We need sense to prevail please....

      Newsreader - 2012-01-30 10:47

      ...rat poison

  • braamc - 2012-01-29 16:09

More to steal, they must be happy

  • Haha - 2012-01-29 16:11

I wonder what will happen if no-one submits their tax this year..I'm willing to pay a fine for very late submission just to see this corrupt goverment crap themselves.

  • Jerzy - 2012-01-29 16:36

The east coast of alberton, springs, boksburg, benoni, any germiston mreader ake up the 20% that didnt pay this year. Newsreader, please tell all your white brethren that next year we are taking it all. Ah, it's good to be the king.

      kenneth.roselt - 2012-01-30 07:43

Did you pay yours, i am from Benoni and paid mine you idiot. Idiots like you are why SA is where it is today, hanging onto the past won't get you far, just look north of our borders.

  • Hartmut - 2012-01-29 17:03

4 Million returns doesn't mean there are four million taxpayer who are paying tax... :)

      Winsome - 2012-01-29 18:11

You are right @Hartmut - there are many people paying PAYE who don't submit tax returns but are still paying tax; and the provisional tax payers are not counted in the above 4 million either. Do taxi owners submit tax returns? They would then fall under business tax. Here's hoping the country's infrastructure benefits from all the tax paid and not the corrupt people in government positions as 4 million people paying normal tax to look after a hefty 50 million sounds ridiculous!

  • Makatikamusona - 2012-01-29 19:18

How come is SARS the only well functioning government department? Is it because they are collecting revenue, this indicates we have the manpower or abilities and with a bit of extra effort we can have a well functioning government

      Showerhead Zooma - 2012-01-29 19:57

What makes you think it functions well? They didn't get my money, and never will. Why should I subsidise the high livings of those theiving, corrupt ANCestors. I would rather go to jail.

      Makatikamusona - 2012-01-29 20:37

You surely not working? are you not buying groceries, petrol, flight tickets, etc. Time to rethink

  • Showerhead Zooma - 2012-01-29 19:46

Great! Feed the fat corrupt cats some moar. Suckers all. Hahaha, will never give these corrupt scum bags my money.

  • Warwick - 2012-01-30 08:20

So 4 million pay towards the 50 million who pay nothing, let alone all the illegals claiming benefits. Do the maths here. Somethings going to give one day.
