Pretoria - Reeva Steenkamp’s mother and other family members will attend the trial of their daughter’s alleged murderer Oscar Pistorius, they announced on Tuesday.

June and Barry Steenkamp issued a statement on Tuesday saying they are looking for “closure and to know that our daughter did not suffer on that tragic Valentine’s Day”.

Pistorius’s trial will start on 3 March. He is accused of shooting Reeva to death in the bathroom of his plush Pretoria home. He claims that he mistook his model girlfriend for an intruder but the state says that he intended to kill her.

The Steenkamps said they intend starting a foundation for abused and poor women.

“We understand and empathise with other parents who have lost a child or loved one through violence or abuse,” they said.

They also asked the media and “well-meaning persons” to respect their privacy when the trial gets underway.
