Johannesburg - The death of Reeva Steenkamp has not only
meant the loss of a child to her parents, but also financial insecurity for
them.
Cecil Myers, Reeva’s “Joburg dad”, confirmed to Beeld that
Reeva had supported her family financially before her death at the home of Oscar Pistorius on 14 February.
Reeva's father, Barry Steenkamp, was a former jockey and
racehorse trainer.
Steenkamp told reporters over the weekend that he did
“little things”, none of which “made a fortune”.
His wife used to work on the farm that the Steenkamps used
to rent and had a riding school, but was now doing catering and was working on
opening a restaurant with friends in Port Elizabeth.
Implications
A relative said whenever Reeva visited her parents she
always made sure that they were financially taken care of as her father was
often not paid for the work he did.
According to reports, the family was not sure where the
money for their next rental payment would be coming from.
“Her death has huge implications for her family,” said the
source.
Reeva’s mother earlier told reporters that the family never
had a lot of money but had lots of love.
“We gave Reeva what we could.”
The Steenkamps have meanwhile accepted assistance from
advocate Dup de Bruyn SC and lawyer Mike Venter, who will be advising the
couple and handle media relations.
“Everything has become too much. I just can’t deal with all
the enquiries anymore,” said Reeva’s father.
“Missing her is the worst in the mornings. You forget.
Sometimes you wonder why she hasn’t called yet to say how it is going; then you
remember again…”
