Relief for Free State as rain falls
Bloemfontein - Light rains began cooling off the central Free State on Wednesday, with the capital of Bloemfontein enjoying afternoon showers.
"The rain band of today was east of Kimberley, south of Welkom, Bloemfontein and places such as Reddersburg and Hobhouse," Bloemfontein weather office forecaster Aslam Fardiwalla said.
He said Wednesday's rain system was moving eastwards over the north-eastern Free State and places such as Welkom might get rain by Wednesday night.
He said the eastern parts in places such as Bethlehem and Warden would probably get rain by Thursday.
Fardiwalla said the rain system was "fairly good" and some 4mm was measured by Wednesday afternoon in Bloemfontein.
The Free State was ravaged by veld fires in the past months with more than 402 000 hectares destroyed, the most in recent years.
Last week and over the past weekend fires destroyed thousands of hectares in grazing in the eastern Free State at places such as Harrismith, Bethlehem, Warden, and in the central parts such as Brandfort.
