Johannesburg - The Gauteng human settlements department will help 350 people left homeless after a shack fire in Marlboro, Johannesburg, it said on Tuesday.

"Our team has sourced over 300 blankets which will provide comfort to affected residents," spokesman Victor Moreriane said in a statement.

The department would also work with the City of Johannesburg to find overnight accommodation for those displaced.

Sixty-nine shacks were destroyed when the fire broke out in the area on Tuesday morning. There were no fatalities and no one was reported missing. The cause of the fire was not known.

Moreriane said the Gift of the Givers was distributing food parcels.

MEC Jacob Mamabolo urged residents living in dwellings close to each other to be cautious when heating their homes.
