Restructure: Police topsy-turvy

Johannesburg - The dust has still not settled on a police restructuring process launched in Gauteng at the weekend and the list of complaints continues to grow.
An irate Johannesburg unit chief said on Wednesday 11 of the 14 members of his administrative unit had received transfer letters.
"Each one of them was responsible for at least 1 000 files. I don't have a clue how we are going to cope."
The unit chief, who chose to remain anonymous fearing victimisation, said the reduction of his unit had not been discussed with him. The unit was dissolved despite a circular from the national police chief stating that this specific unit fulfilled an important function and should not be hampered.
A North Rand inspector in turn could not understand why she and several colleagues who had been doing office work for years had been transferred to a charge office.
"It has nothing to do with the distribution of skills when someone who hasn't worked in a charge office for 22 years is sent to work there. How could one possibly contribute to better service provision?"
