Return Swazi prisoner to SA: ANCYL

2012-09-06 12:42

Johannesburg - A South African man convicted of terrorism and treason in Swaziland must be allowed to return to his home country, the ANC Youth League said on Thursday.

"We in the Congress Youth League know that Comrade [Amos] Mbedzi is only guilty for supporting the struggle of the Swazi people against the repressive tinkhundla regime," spokesperson Khusela Sangoni-Khawe said in a statement.

The tinkhundla system of local governance in Swaziland is based on traditional authorities.

Nelson Kgwete, spokesperson for the department of international affairs, confirmed that Mbedzi was convicted by a Swazi court last week.

"We are aware of the conviction and our embassy in Swaziland has been in contact with him, during the trial and after the conviction."

Last Wednesday news agency AFP reported that Mbedzi was found guilty of planning a bomb attack against King Mswati III in 2008.

The bomb exploded while Mbedzi was allegedly on his way to plant the incendiary device, seriously injuring him.

Sangoni-Khawe said the charges against Mbedzi were baseless and that he had only participated in demonstrations aimed at ending the dictatorship of Swaziland's absolute monarchy.

She said the ANCYL called for the government of Swaziland to release all political prisoners and allow exiles to return.

"The ANCYL calls upon its members to intensify their support and solidarity with the oppressed peoples of Swaziland by taking part in an action to demand a democratic Swaziland, which will soon be organised at the border of South Africa and Swaziland."

Why is South Africans meddling in Swaziland affairs? Don’t we have enough criminals and murderers over here? Who does the YL think they are dictating to another nation?

      Mark - 2012-09-18 02:26

But they campaign to be 'left alone' by the central government in their own little fiefdoms of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. ANC-YL showing their double-standards and idiocy, as usual.

  • willem.vanrensburg.35 - 2012-09-06 13:22

I think a good solution would be to send him to a Zimbabwean prison, with the ex president of the youth league. They like Zim.

  • olivia.debruyn - 2012-09-06 13:33

And now we negotiate for terrorists. Oops, forgot we are run by them!

  • rick.kabose - 2012-09-06 13:40

  • dhavandran.palavar - 2012-09-06 13:42

it not yet the 5th of november , you still have time to put and end to dictatorship in swazi-land and within your own anc.

  • pur.pleibus - 2012-09-06 13:50

If the ANCYL are happy to free "Comrade" Mbedzi as he was just supporting the struggle of Swazi people against the regime, are they also happy to free the Boeremag Commandos who were just supporting the struggle of Afrikaners against the regime? Seems to me that it is the same thing.

  • Joubs1957 - 2012-09-06 13:54

He is innocent - He was probably actually carrying a Fire Cracker for a "Guy Fawkes" day celebration!!! lol

  • dessa.juniortshabisto - 2012-09-06 13:59

What like condoms and Vaseline ?

  • John Peter Steyn - 2012-09-06 14:08

Swaziland is one of the last true dictatorships in the region. SA should support the Swazis to get rid of their king and his cronies.

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 14:24

      I agree

      juannepierre - 2012-09-06 14:25

      Down with tradition, it's flawed.

  • james.howlett.54540 - 2012-09-06 14:15

I see the 'comrades' are at it again. They should rather have sent Robert McBride; at least he some actual experience with being a terrorist and blowing things up.

  • tshidiso.mathang - 2012-09-06 14:39

I hope they jump the border and get arrested for high treason as well, we could do with few idiots away.

      FinalJustice - 2012-09-06 15:07

Brilliant suggestion! I fail to understand how these dinky-toy organizations demand interference in other countries' affairs, yet every time the international community comes forth and interfere in SA affairs they are also the first to whine about it ... Capital punishment for high treason, say I
