Cape Town - No arrests have been made yet following the fatal shooting of 66-year-old Plettenberg Bay businessman John Barnes, who was found dead next to the body of his dog in a bedroom. The dog had also been shot.

Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said on Tuesday that forensic experts were on the scene shortly after the murder and he was positive that leads would follow.

Barnes’s wife discovered his body in the room next to her bedroom at their lodge in Wittedrift at around 04:00 on Friday, after she had apparently heard a scuffle next door, Pojie said.

"She investigated and found him with bullet wounds to his upper body. The dog also sustained a bullet wound to his body."

Detectives found used bullet shells and collected them for ballistics test.

A murder docket was opened.

Pojie said the autopsy might be conducted later on Tuesday to determine the cause of death.

A reward was being offered for information that may lead to any arrests and prosecutions.

The amount would depend on the type of information provided, Pojie said.
