Rhino found dead, mutilated in N West

2012-10-14 22:45

Johannesburg - Two rhino were found dead and mutilated at the Shingalana Lion and Rhino Game Reserve in Haartebees, North West, on Sunday morning, the reserve said.

Spokesperson Jaco Pfister said the corpses were discovered with their horns, ears and genitals removed. He said this was the second such incident at the reserve in a week after another rhino was recovered on Monday.

"We believe the same people were behind both incidents because they have removed similar parts from the rhino," he said.

No one had been arrested and police were investigating.

Oh my will this never end? A local reserve here lost 3 rhinos in September. One, (bull)cost more than R1 million. However, and blame is the blame, the reserves are sometimes reluctant to spend money on 'protection'. There are new an innovative protective items available now, they are costly though, and I guess the owners feel they are willing to take the chance? Shame

Why not shot 1st then ask said victim later what they doing on your propety. That will stop them :/

If you are not a game ranger in a game reserve or national park and found carrying a weapon, arrested/shot, no questions asked. This strategy seems to work really well in Kenya? Why not implement a zero tolerance law for people with weapons of any sort found in game serves and national parks?? Rhinos can't protect themselves? Eye for an eye....

Question: How do these poachers enter a game reserve with weapons??? Are there no security at the gates of the reserves??? Perhaps stronger security measures should be taken...

I simply dispair at the endless slaughter, all for short term profit. Penalties need to be ramped up because obviously right now the system is failing. Trespass on recognised rhino sanctuaries needs to be a criminal and not simply a civil crime, because the law is doing nothing to protect our natural heritage.

How do the poachers just roam around so freely?

  • darryl.maze.5 - 2012-10-15 08:41

Seriously!!!! How many more rhino's have to be slaughtered before Mr fat lazy president send the army in??? Oh wait, he'll wake up when there is one rhino left. For gods sakes Mr president! Our rhino's are getting slaughtered and yet you and your cANCer government still have not done anything to stop it. Get our lazy army in now to deal with these poachers. Shoot first ask questions later.
