Rhino shot 11 times, survives

2011-10-13 08:57

Polokwane - A rhino survived after being shot 11 times on a Limpopo farm, according to a report on Thursday.

Gaven Holden-Smith, of an on independent anti-poaching unit in the Waterberg area, told Beeld newspaper that the young cow was found on Wednesday on a farm between Bela-Bela and Thabazimbi.

The rhino was being treated to avoid infections and would probably be moved to another farm in the area which was believed to be safer, Holden-Smith said.

Since January, a total of 324 rhinos had been poached and more than 180 people arrested in connection with rhino poaching. This figure included two white rhino killed by poachers in the Kruger National Park on Tuesday.

The government is in the process of tightening up hunting regulations in a bid to curb rhino hunting.

KILL the bastard poachers!!! KILL them all!!!!

      Komasa - 2011-10-13 09:55

@Evan 'kill' your perlemoen poachers while you are about it.

      Marc - 2011-10-13 10:01

Right on Evan. Kill the poachers on sight. Kill. Kill. Kill. What is desperately needed is hunting parties to kill poachers. You pay a small amount, just as you would for any hunting licence, but there is no annual quota. As many as you like. Tuck in lads. Lets see if hunters want to hunt something that just might shoot back. And at the same time, they would be doing a lot of good. Any spill over in entrants for this sport, are free to go to the Somali coast to shoot Somalian pirates. Again, no limit and tons of fun.

      Evan - 2011-10-13 10:03

Komasa - I would gladly watch poachers of any-kind meet their maker.

      Bloodstone - 2011-10-13 10:36

oooh...Komasa is upset because Baddy used the word "Government" in a negative way. Get over yourself Komasa and grow up.

      James - 2011-10-13 10:57

HA HA .... Yeah I agree .... maybe we should start a new sport "Poacher Shooting" .... bring in people from all over to hunt and kill poachers .... would be a boom in tourism ....... :-)

      GypseyAnn - 2011-10-13 11:04

Evan I concur totally with you. Can you just imagine the trauma through which this poor animal has gone. When people read this Facebook posting by a vet I think we will all know just how wicked these people are.

      GypseyAnn - 2011-10-13 11:05

@ Baddy - Perhaps it is not in the governments interest to step in because there is good revenue coming their way?

  • Bardy - 2011-10-13 09:05

    Give that Rhino a bells!

  • Gareth - 2011-10-13 09:07

I would love to shoot a poacher 11 times and see if he survives !!!!!!

      MeltdowN - 2011-10-13 09:19

I have lots of ammo, shall we get started?

      Succubus - 2011-10-13 09:34

  • Anneleen - 2011-10-13 09:20

Government, to curb rhino hunting...shoot these thugs on questions asked!

      Alan - 2011-10-13 11:31

100% agree - this is humanity at it's worst!!! One wonders why it is so difficult for Govt. to be effective? Is it because the penalties are a joke, or is there some level of corruption in Govt. that profits from this? We would all do well to remember, that what happens to the earth and it's pants and creatures, will happen to us.

      Anneleen - 2011-10-13 11:36

@Alan...thank you for your reply. Wish i can sign up to go out there and fight this war...applaud all actions designed to generate money to save the this stage it would be good to get out in the field and fight this war.

  • KimmyH - 2011-10-13 09:21

    Die hard rhino!!

  • rainman - 2011-10-13 09:23

  • KaB - 2011-10-13 09:28

WHAT...11 times...f*cking bastards...absolute pigs! Resilience...I hope this cow survives and goes on to mother many more rhino!

  • TheTruth - 2011-10-13 09:35

The government has prostituted themselves to the Chinese. I would not be surprised if a few Rhino horns were thrown into the deal...based on their inability to stop the killing of Rhinos!

      Ronnie Jacobs - 2011-10-13 09:54

      ...your mind is shallow!

      daaivark - 2011-10-13 10:57

      What mind, Ronnie?

      suritha.blake - 2011-11-03 15:39

@the truth I agree. The buyers of the rhino horns are Chinese. Get rid of the buyer, get rid of the poachers. The poachers does not even use the horns. They sell it to the damn Chinese who believe that their genitals will grow bigger when they use that and perlemoen. SA is China's bitch en kla! (does Dalai Lama ring a bell)

  • MrMacky - 2011-10-13 09:42

Rhino is 50 cent's pet... Get well soon!

  • onetickie - 2011-10-13 09:45

I do not believe this killing BASTARDS are not known. How can syndicates get away with this - ALL FOR MONEY/GREED. They deserve life in prison because unfortunately SA believes demons like these are entitled to live. Had I the money I would pay mercenaries to stalk & kill this murderous monsters. I pray the worst happenings on them and their families - never thought I'd say something like that, but now I do.

  • Morarius - 2011-10-13 09:47

I hope they shoot the poachers 11 times, they should not survive! Please you GUTLESS ANC WANNABE GOVERNMENT - DO SOMETHING!!!!

  • Rene - 2011-10-13 09:51

  • 2bornot2b - 2011-10-13 09:56

VERY SOOON....this land will be nothing.. with a bunch of hooligans running around and wondering HOW?? this could have on second thought THEY will probably be happy living like they once did.. animals!

      Komasa - 2011-10-13 10:04

Must be a member of the intellectualy disadvantaged?

      Baddy - 2011-10-13 10:44

@Komasa - you should know, you are in the same group you plank.. Clown!!

  • ncroeser - 2011-10-13 10:03

All you ever hear is "the government is in process....' bla bla bla and a whole lot of other redtape burocratic crap! Action needs to be taken immediately, rangers should be allowed to hunt those responsible, hunt them down like the animals that they don't have any mercy for. Hunt them with whatever needed! The rangers should be given a bit more leash to act immediately. Have anyone noticed that since China and SA's import export deals Rhino poaching has soared?..... just a thought......

      Megan - 2011-10-13 11:01

When your president only has a primary school education you can't expect things to happen quickly... Lots and lots of reading and explaining and then possibly more explain with some pretty pictures to help demonstrate the point all takes time...

  • Neo - 2011-10-13 10:05

Paying customers is not the problem, as soon as you stop the commercial value of Rhino, no game farm will risk having Rhino's. The remaining population will be descimated. If you stop the commercial demmand, then supply will also stop.

      Alan - 2011-10-13 11:41

This is a big problem. To my mind, the only solution is to slap these buzzturds with life in jail. Silly little fines are a joke, and most of the time I would guess that the syndicates bribe their way out of trouble. Every citizen in this country eeds to set their moral compasses and take a stand against everything that is wrong. And to our dear Govt. - it should start with you!

  • Sgtsa - 2011-10-13 10:09

Tie them to a ant hill and pure honey on them. That will do the Job. Fcuking Bastards....

  • Marc - 2011-10-13 10:10

What I want to see is a bunch of unarmed rhino murderers locked up in a pen with a really annoyed rhino. Its a new sport. Spanish spectators might be interested as they will now have an alternative to bullfighting. Rhino murderers getting turned to paste.

      GypseyAnn - 2011-10-13 12:56

Will have to be Black Rhino - they are vicious. The White ones are actually very tolerant. But a good idea none the less!!

  • morena - 2011-10-13 10:30

how does one volunteer to stop poaching, i would give two weekends every month and drive to our national parks to support the patrols there, It would be great and appreciated if

  • Masego - 2011-10-13 10:49

Heartless evil people, hope justice takes place sooner and they must be punished.

      wayne - 2011-10-13 11:24

Dream Promotions has started a raffel to raise funds to help save the Rhino and reading this i think all proceeds will now go towards an army of people who is prepared to assist in killing the poachers.Intrested parties can email their details to

  • Alan - 2011-10-13 11:26

This is really shocking that animals have to suffer like this through human greed and stupidity. Toungue in cheek - maybe not enough is being done because our Chinese masters are still demanding their horns??

  • Jeff - 2011-10-13 11:33

i saw 2 Rhino at the Kruger over the weekend. Stunning characters. Incacerate these murderer poachers. I would

In China - courtesy of the puppets.

  • charms - 2011-10-13 12:16

Untill China and Asia and all those countries are educated and informed of the fact that Rhino horn does absolutely nothing for your health of sex drive, this will always be a problem...advertising and the showing of horror photos of rhinos being killed and so forth should be shown every 30 minutes on their TV's ... maybe just maybe threir might be someone there who might feel discusted....that is if they are capable of some can only hope....if they are anything like our government I doubt that however...there are just know feelings there, just greed!!!

  • grimbie1 - 2011-10-13 12:23

New sport.. How about the genitals of poachers get a prize of R50k. The more bullets used and the more suffering they go through the more the prize money.

  • Karel - 2011-10-13 12:41

our tourism revenue is partly dependant on bioiversity and rhino form a big part of this. The chinese are happy to trade with south africa but need to better enforce customs for imports of e.g. rhino horn or they are simply fuelling poaching by opening up the market by their presence. Imagine we traded in panda balls in SA and went to china to poach them and did nothing here to stop balls being imported. This is the small prick people needing "stimulants" to give them placebo woody and to try please their partners. Sad

  • DimitriP - 2011-10-13 12:49

There are more rhinos in private reserves/game farms than in provincial reserves. Private owners spend money looking after their valuable rhinos (vet bills, fencing, game guards etc) and get money in return (eco-tourism, hunting, live sales). No return on investment = little incentive to keep rhino. Yesterday a rhino owner in Brits said he is going to sell off his 22 rhinos because of poaching & the cost of protecting his rhinos. Clearly he was not making enough of a return on his investment. He had 22 rhinos!! Each year he risked 1 or 2 of those 22 rhinos dying somewhere in the veld of old age FOR NO RETURN. Better to hunt them, make money to keep the farm going so that 22 rhinos can still live there. Each year 22 rhinos become 27 rhinos because they breed. If the farm can only naturally carry 22 rhinos then he has to either hunt or sell the excess. And he makes money and keeps looking after his core 22 rhinos. Ban hunting & rhino owners may decide it's not worth. But landowners are not buying now (risk). Some may feel it's better to let the rhinos get poached and die off from disease or whatever. Inject them with contraceptives so that they don't breed and so that they slowly die out? Why keep them? If you want to see them then go to KNP? Is that what you want? And if a disease breaks out and wipes out all of KNP's rhino's we will be sorry that the majority of our rhinos are no longer spread across the country on private land where most of them are looked after

  • Eternity - 2011-10-13 12:53

What can the public do to help with this Rhino crisis? I donated money last year to a group that, now, I have no doubt is fake (completely disgusting!). What legit foundation can we support?

      GypseyAnn - 2011-10-13 13:04

I would perhaps think of supporting Rights for Rhinos - those are the guys who walked from Limpopo province to Cape Point educating people along the way. VERY GOOD GUYS BY THE LOOKS OF THINGS!

      DimitriP - 2011-10-13 13:11

      1. Maintain legal hunting with good controls and eliminate Vientnamese loopholes. Our rhinos need private landowners to keep them. And landowners need a financial reason to. 2. Stiffer penalties for poachers 3. Legalise trade and destroy the black market 3. Harvest rhino horn and get it to market 4. Anti-poaching tax on all legally hunted rhino to go back into conservation & anti-poaching 5. Major drive to change demand. Huge educational campaign in the East dispelling the myth about rhino horn. Adverts on TV, radio, magazines, schools, hospitals and especially clinics specialising in sexual health. REAL government buy-in from Eastern governments based on REAL pressure by the West. High profile celebrities, sportspeople, TV stars and other national and international heroes that people in the East respect to be used in the educational adverts. 6. Endangered Wildlife Trust, WWF, Rhinos Alive etc. 7. DO NOT support Animal Rights collection schemes who just can't wait for people to get emotional so that they can get money out of them. They are useless. 8. Rights For Rhinos does look legit Then we have a chance

  • Enid Matthews - 2011-10-13 14:35

This is never gonna stop untill serious steps are gonna be taken by the goverment, either kill the poachers or put them away for life. These scum are taking away what few precious, beautiful wild animals we have.

  • Enid Matthews - 2011-10-13 14:41

Can we not hunt the poachers, give me a rifle, shotgun, hell give me a crossbow and I will be good to go. Just name the time and place.

  • hannelie gerber - 2011-10-13 16:33

"The government is in the process of tightening up hunting regulations in a bid to curb rhino hunting" - WHAT THE F#$K ??????????????????????????????? Why the hell were they on a "OK to Hunt" list in the first place? aren't they part of our national pride, the big 5 remember.....

  • DimitriP - 2011-10-13 17:40

Getting emotional about rhino poaching(or any animal) is understandable. However, the sheer number of over-emotional people ignorant of sound conservation and economic principles is frightening. Understand the REALITIES of conservation, sustainable utilisation & hunting's role in it before making nonsensical emotionally-charged statements. Here is a non-emotional view from a group of experts on rhino, including a world-renowned & highly respected conservation organisation. Read it. Still feel that hunting should be banned? Then send the rhino/farm owners something like this ... Dear Rhino / Farm Owner How can you allow the hunting of beautiful animals on your property? It's disgusting. Poor animals. They don't stand a chance against high-powered rifles. Stop the hunting. I don't care if you get no revenue from hunting to help run the farm. Just stop hunting. I don't care if you turn your whole farm into a mealie farm where you can make a profit. Just stop hunting. I don't care if you will have to plough up the bush in order to plant mealies and get rid of the animals including the rhino. Just stop hunting. I don't care if all your neighbours do the same thing. Just stop hunting. I don't care if the only rhinos left are in National Parks just as long as hunting is banned. Regards XX You don't have to like hunting but acknowledge that it plays a role in conservation of animals including rhino
