Rhino moved to prevent poaching

2012-10-15 11:28

Durban - Thirteen black rhino have been moved from the Ezemvelo KwaZulu-Natal Wildlife reserve to a new home in the province to prevent poaching, the Mercury reported on Monday.

The rhino were moved as part of the World Wildlife Fund's Black Rhino Range Expansion project, which helps increase their numbers.

Project head Jacques Flamand said the rhino were sedated and flown by helicopter to their new home.

"We believe this is the best way to move rhinos as it does not compromise their breathing and reduces the distance and time they have to travel by truck over difficult terrain," he said.

According to the World Wildlife Fund SA, there are about 5 000 black rhino left in the wild.

This year more than 400 black and white rhino have been killed and dehorned in the country to feed a market in the East where their horns are believed to have healing properties.

nevermind that ... just saying that there are that many rhino in one place at once time is bad enough!!! Seems press don't really care about animal safety but rather their own gain of publishing a story.

I have said for such a long time that they need to move the rhinos out of the game parks to a place of safety. am glad someone finally decided to do just that!

I hope it works, we have lost just as many here in the ec as anywhere else.

I wish we could sedate those poachers and move them out of here. Can't someone mince up horse manure and sell it for gazillion dollar to those guys in the east as rhino horn? Don't think they will notice. Aparently it's a status symbol to use the stuff and doesn't realy do what they think it is supposed to do...whatever that is...only heard its got to do with the man vegatables but what do I know.

Isn't it sad that we have to move Rhino's from a Wildlife Reserve to another location to protect them from poachers. The Wildlife Reserve is supposed to be a safe place for our animals. Such a sick society we live in where they'll take a life of such a beautiful animal for sexual satisfaction.

Why can't we just leave the animals alone? soon there will be NOTHING! not ALL animals reproduce like bunnies, cats or dogs What will these poachers do when they have killed everything? such a shame what this world has become and what people will do for money! :-(
