Johannesburg - A 24-year-old man alleged to be connected to a horrific attack on two couples at Rhodes Park in Kensington, was expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday.

The man is suspected to have been part of a gang of around 12 men that attacked the two couples who were enjoying a picnic and then a stroll through the Johannesburg park just over two weeks ago.

The gang stripped the men and tied them up with their clothing before throwing them in the lake where they drowned. One of the women was raped while the other escaped without any physical harm.

The suspect was arrested on Friday in Yeoville. He would face a charge of murder, rape and attempted murder.

Police said they were confident that his arrest would lead to the capture of the other suspects.
