Grahamstown - A Rhodes University student and a man were found dead in a residence room on Saturday, Eastern Cape police said.

The bodies of a woman, 21, and the 34-year-old man were found around 06:00, Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekula said.

No visible injuries were found on the body of the woman, who is a student at the university.

"A post mortem would be conducted to determine the cause of her death," he said.

"The 34-year-old man's body had a bullet wound to the head and it is suspected that he may have shot himself."

An inquest docket was opened to determine the cause of the woman's death.

The university's dean of students Vivian de Klerk posted on her Facebook page that the student's name was Amanda Tweyi.

"I very much regret to announce the death of one of our students, Ms Amanda Tweyi this morning. Another person who is not a student at Rhodes University also lost his life in the unfortunate incident, which occurred at Cullen Bowles House.

"I am not at liberty to give further information about the circumstances, as police investigations are under way."

Tweyi resided in Rosa Parks House and was in her second year of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree.

De Klerk said Tweyi came from King William's Town.

"We extend sincere condolences to her family and friends."

She said students in both residences concerned would be receiving counselling. Arrangements for a memorial service would be announced in due course, she said.

Mjekula said the man was also believed to be from King William's Town.

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that both of the deceased were Rhodes students. News24 apologises for the error.
