Grahamstown - An 18-year-old Rhodes University student was raped during the weekend's tri-varsity competition, police said on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Mali Govender said the woman was walking from the Rhodes Union to New Street on Saturday night when she was attacked by two men.
She was dragged to some bushes where three other men were waiting. She was pinned down by two of the men while the other three took turns raping her.
Govender said it was not clear whether the rape had happened on the university grounds or just outside.
"When we spoke to her this morning she was very traumatised and was not very clear."
Police suspect that the attackers could be from one of the other university's that took part in the weekend's sporting events.
Tri-varsity is an annual competition between Rhodes University, the University of Port Elizabeth and Fort Hare University.
"She has given us descriptions of her attackers and that will form part of our investigation," Govender said.
