Johannesburg - A construction worker was missing, feared drowned at Main Beach in Richard's Bay on Tuesday, said the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).
NSRI spokesperson Cornel du Toit said the 38-year-old man was last spotted swimming near concrete breakwater protectors (dolosse) with his colleagues.
"It is suspected that he got into difficulty in strong rip-currents," he said.
"He was reportedly swimming in his clothes, which we suspect contributed to his getting into difficulty as the water-laden clothing may have weighed him down in the surf."
Du Toit said rescue workers searched for him until late in the evening. The search was suspended when it became too dark. It would resume on Wednesday.
"Police have been informed and they will open an inquest docket," he said.
