Roads blocked in Petrusburg protest

2011-12-08 08:01

Bloemfontein - About 200 disgruntled Petrusburg residents blockaded streets and burnt tyres during a service delivery protest on Thursday, Free State police said.

"They used stones and rocks to block the roads, but no serious incidents were reported," police spokesperson Captain Harry Nagel said.

"Police are monitoring the situation closely."

Residents had gathered since 04:00.

The group wanted a response to a memorandum of demands which had been delivered to the Letsameng municipality two weeks ago over the provision of water and sanitation.

All the people expect everything. Our domestic work rang up 2000 in phone calls last month. I confronted her and she said 'oh, take it off my salary'. I explained that it is firstly theft and secondly it is Christmas where she usually gets a double cheque and presents and that now she was getting none of it. And she also was spending 2 hours a day on the phone! She didn't understand the problem.
