Pretoria - A security guard and an armed robber were wounded in a shoot-out at a liquor shop in Samancor Park, Pretoria on Tuesday, said police.

Constable Portia Maleka said two security guards saw three armed men trying to break into the shop on Vonkprop Road shortly before 04:00.

A shoot-out ensued. Two of the robbers fled, leaving behind their wounded accomplice. One of the guards was also wounded.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeff Wicks said the robber was in a serious, but stable condition.

He said it was believed that the guard had sustained as many as 17 gunshot wounds and was in critical condition.

Maleka said the robber was in hospital under police guard.

He faced charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, attempted business robbery and attempted murder.

Police were still looking for his two accomplices.
