Johannesburg - A man was shot and killed after he robbed a woman at gunpoint of about R20 000 in cash in Soweto, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

He was one of two men who robbed the woman of her handbag at a supermarket in Dobsonville, said Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela.

"The woman was on her way to pay for an order of some stock for her business when she was robbed," said Makhubela.

A passerby who witnessed the robbery was shot in the upper body after he tried to rescue the woman.

He was rushed by ambulance to hospital where he was reported to be in a critical condition.
The robbers fled the scene on foot.

Police were alerted to the incident by another witness who spotted their vehicle passing by. He gave police the description of the robbers and the direction they took after the robbery.

A manhunt was launched and the men were seen walking in Doornklop Cemetery.

A gunfight ensued between the police and the robbers and one of the robbers was shot and killed. The other robber managed to escape.

A stolen handbag and an unlicensed firearm were found.

Cases of attempted murder, armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm were being investigated.

An inquest docket was also opened.
