Johannesburg - A man was arrested for a house robbery in
Mdantsane, near East London, on Thursday morning, police said.
Three armed men forced their way into the house of the
owner of a local restaurant in the area and held the people inside at gunpoint,
said police spokesperson Nkosikho Mzuku.
A woman in one of the rooms heard people screaming and
called the police, but the robbers walked in just before she hung up.
They asked her who she had called.
"They [then] instructed her to inform the police
that they must not worry, it was just a joke. Everything is fine in the
house," said Mzuku.
However, police ignored the second call and went to the
house.
They arrested a 42-year-old man and confiscated his
firearm.
The other two fled.
The man arrested would appear in the Mdantsane
Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of house robbery and possession of an
unlicensed firearm.
