Johannesburg - A "stubborn" elderly Brixton woman has told how three robbers threatened to cut off her finger with her butter knife if they couldn't get her wedding ring off.
She also said she wouldn’t let them tie up her hands or cover her face with a towel while they assaulted her husband.
Annie Wilmans, 72, and her husband Mel, 77, were overpowered by three robbers when they left their home in Brixton, Johannesburg, on Friday May 13.
"Our dog, Muffett, was ill and we were on our way to the PDSA (People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals, an organisation that treats pets for free).
"We had just opened the front door when three men overpowered us and forced us back into the house,” Wilmans said on Monday.
"It happened so quickly."
Stabbed
Her husband was tied up in the house. “One man stabbed him with a screwdriver in the right leg. His ribs, chest and back were also hurt.”
She said her husband was also choked and a man sat on his chest.
The robbers wanted to tie her up too but she refused. One of them then apparently called her “stubborn”.
"He then took off my wedding ring. He said he would cut off my finger with my own butter knife if the ring didn’t come off easily,” she said.
By 09:10, the robbers fled.
Wilmans said to one of the robbers that her husband had to be at the doctor’s at 09:20 and that if they didn’t get there on time, they would be fetched from the house.
The robbers fled with her wedding ring and her husband’s knife.
Wilmans then called the police.
Police confirmed on Monday they were investigating a case of house robbery and assault.
