Robbers attack matrics on party weekend

Durban - It was supposed to be a weekend of fun for a group of matrics celebrating the end of school, but it turned into a nightmare when robbers attacked them at their rented holiday home.

Only a few hours after 16 North Coast pupils arrived at their rented a house in eMdloti after their matric ball, they were attacked by six armed men who stabbed one of them, pistol-whipped others and robbed them, the Daily Voice reported.

The robbers took cash, cellphones, laptops and other belongings.

“They were extremely aggressive and not wearing masks. They warned us not to look at them while waving their guns and knives at us,” said one of the boys.

“One of my friends was knocked unconscious after he was hit on the head with the butt of the gun. They kept demanding the keys to the safe. The more we denied [having the keys], the more aggressive they became. They terrorised us for over half an hour.”

The boy added: “It took some convincing for our parents to give us permission for a weekend away. It was supposed to have been three days of fun. We worked extremely hard throughout the year.

“It was a really bad start to the holidays.”

One of the teenagers was taken to hospital with a stab wound. The teens were receiving trauma counselling.

Police confirmed that some members of the gang were believed to have hit another house nearby, where security guards shot at them and killed one suspect.
