Johannesburg - Robbers who targeted an armoured truck from the Diamond Centre in Cleveland on Thursday morning, had to flee empty-handed as the truck was empty when they struck.

According to the Bedfordview police, three guards were travelling in an armoured vehicle when a white BMW began following and shooting at them.

One of the guards in the armoured vehicle was shot, confirmed Sergeant Mduduzi Nhlabathi.

"The security guards continued to drive and were heading to the Bedford Gardens Hospital with the suspects still chasing them," said Nhlabathi.

On the way to the hospital, the security guard's vehicle crashed into a Mercedes Benz.

The drivers of the BMW then fled.

News24 reporter, Thomas Hartleb, said he came across the attackers' white BMW as it fled the scene.

He said the vehicle drove the wrong way down Langerman Street in Kensington.

"He [the driver] was probably fleeing the scene. [He was] waving a gun out his window and ordering people to get out of the way," said Hartleb.

Nhlabathi told News24 the vehicle was empty at the time of the attack, and that the security guards were not in possession of any gold, diamonds or money.

The condition of the wounded security guard was not immediately clear.
