Pretoria - A six-year-old boy was shot dead and his sister of 13 was seriously injured when armed men broke into their Atteridgeville home on Sunday and stole R500, Pretoria police reported on Monday.
Earlier, three men armed with guns had broken into a spaza shop owned by the children's father in Saulsville, said inspector Anton Breedt. They fled with R2 000 in cash.
About three hours later, the three men returned to the premises, this time going to the shop owner's home.
They gained entry to the single room where the father and mother shared a bed while the children slept on the floor.
The men opened fire, hitting the six-year-old in the head, Breedt said.
The boy's sister was shot in the neck. She was admitted to the Kalafong hospital in a serious condition.
The men took R500 from the house before running away.
Anybody with information on the whereabouts of the three robbers should contact inspector Peter Sekhudu on 012 334 4421.
Breedt said the family could not be identified until their next-of-kin had been informed of the incident.
