Pretoria - A police constable was shot and killed during a robbery at a spaza shop in Temba, north of Pretoria, on Wednesday morning, Gauteng police said.

The owner of the shop was also shot and was taken to hospital critically wounded, said Colonel Noxolo Kweza.

Police were alerted to the robbery in the early morning hours.

"When they got there, the suspects were still inside the premises and began firing shots at the police members," she said.

"The constable was shot and killed."

The robbers escaped with the shop owner's firearm and two cellphones.

No other officers were injured. It was not known whether any of the robbers were wounded.

No arrests have been made.
