Johannesburg - A married couple were shot and wounded and their three-year old child was beaten by robbers in Mthatha on Sunday morning, Eastern Cape police said.
Inspector Mike Fatyela said the family was asleep at their home in Chris Hani Park, Mthatha, when they were confronted by two men.
"The robbers demanded money from the man and his wife and when they refused they were shot. The woman was shot twice in the stomach and once in the arm and her husband was shot twice in the head," he said.
Their three-year-old son was pistol-whipped and sustained cuts to his head and forehead.
All three were taken to hospital. The two adults were in a critical condition, said Fatyela.
No arrests have been made and police are investigating cases of attempted murder and assault.
