Robbers shot dead at Durban mall

2012-06-01 15:11

Durban - Two armed robbers were killed in a shoot-out at Durban's Gateway mall on Friday.

They were apparently part of a gang that attempted to rob an SBV Services cash-in-transit van at the shopping complex, police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said.

It was not immediately known how many robbers were involved and whether any cash was stolen from the van. One of the security guards was struck with a hammer, while the other was shot in the leg.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said the two guards were taken to Umhlanga Hospital in a serious condition.

Zwane said a statement would be issued later.

  • Kobus Steyn - 2012-06-01 15:19

    Good, kill the rubbish!!!

  • Gavin - 2012-06-01 15:21

The problem is allowing Cash Vans to be on the premises during times when people are doing their shopping, force cash vans to come early in the morning and only outside, this way they can be protected better and no civilians can come into contact with this kind of violence.

      zaakiro - 2012-06-01 16:15

Problem is when there's a set time like "early morning" or late after-noon it gives these morons time to plan their heists. Although i agree that civilians getting caught in the cross-fire is first priority.

  • Henry - 2012-06-01 15:22

    It's a good friday today

      Kala - 2012-06-01 16:11

I'm sure I'm seeing a pattern here. Are we not seeing more and more armed robberies occuring in a Friday and ending with the robbers being shot?

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-06-01 16:30

      Kala - it's a good pattern

      Kala - 2012-06-01 16:33

I agree Charles. They need to increase the thief killing to twice a week now.

  • tednhet - 2012-06-01 15:25

  • Ian - 2012-06-01 15:35

This is good news, I picked up a wallet today, on the side of the road, of some poor guy who was hijacked at gun point. I got hold of him to return the wallet and he said 3 gun wielding guys had hijacked him and stole his car and his money. This has to's becoming ridiculous. Dont carry cash, carry a TAZER!

      Jan - 2012-06-01 18:48

Its times like this we should not be annoyed at street vendors and people at robots selling. At least their trying to make a honest living and not becoming criminals. Sometimes I just give them a R1 just to say thanks for trying to live honestly instead of doing crime.

  • Katoolsie - 2012-06-01 15:35

Line them all up and shoot them in the face!!

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-01 15:41

What a moronic comment! Ask the security guards who were injured whether they agree with that.

      randomhero6661 - 2012-06-01 16:12

vicky, imagine they killed innocent shoppers????

      Stewart Croucamp - 2012-06-01 16:27

Vicky you silly girl. Do you not realise how the criminals are destroying this country. We can't hang them so we must shoot them.

      CharlesDumbwin - 2012-06-01 16:31

sorry vicky, but hippy liberalism died a long time ago. it's time for us to reclaim our country back from these brazen, viscious thugs

He got what he deserved. We Criminals will always be criminal and that is not stopping soon. But I am more worried about the article on the following link

  • Keith - 2012-06-01 15:52

Hey guys please please calm down. How can you rejoice when they shot and killed two robbers now you say they the cops must kill them all.So if they kill al the criminals then the cops will not have any work to do and will have to be retrenched.Come leave the criminals alone so that the cops have jobs or should the cops become criminals?? Oh sorry I forgat Mr.Bones told me the cops are heavely involve is crime now some cops have criminal records

      Daniel - 2012-06-01 16:56

      Are you ok?

      michellec.strydom.5 - 2012-06-01 17:22

      Double You Tee Ef.

      Kevin - 2012-06-02 12:12

Keith, I'm going to go with your comment being sarcastic, otherwise I cannot explain it. (Maybe the Murphy gives us an Irish clue?)I look forward to the day that the police have no work to do and I seriously don't think the two who were killed in this case were really just looking for some bread money. Crime prevention and heavy sentences are supposed to be a deterrent, but if one has a good lawyer these days, these seldom are implemented. It's dangerous to have shooting in the malls, but if we didn't do something about it, the criminals would be shooting anyway. Well done SAPS, keep up the good work.

  • Burtfred - 2012-06-01 16:04

"Two armed robbers were killed" Good! - this has made my day.

      Jan - 2012-06-01 18:46

      Happened bit earlier than 3pm.

      malcolm.molver - 2012-06-01 22:40

      Happened at about 1:30pm.

      sanz.zn - 2012-06-02 15:58

You right Greg, whenever i go to Nedbank or First National at Gateway, im always scared because it would be so easy for people to just walk in there and rob the place

  • Deepchund - 2012-06-01 17:56

Well done to those that shot the robbers dead. Feed the dead b.....s to the wild animals.

  • toofaan.monsoon - 2012-06-01 18:02

As a guy who takes his family to Gateway almost every week, I would like to thank whoever did the shooting. I believe that this is a fantastic detterent to possible future incidents. You've made my favourite mall safer. I salute you. I'd actually encourage the setting up of a reward fund for them. I certainly will contribute.

      Kevin - 2012-06-02 12:14

Well said, I am also a regular visitor there.

  • Solly Musubi - 2012-06-01 18:11

  • rudiwaan.joseph - 2012-06-01 18:21

death is still very much a penalty for crime in SA! I say the dastards deserved what they got! Track down the rest of the gang and make them pay too! And should they get shot in the process , i hope they f*c#ing DIE! To the guards i pray for a speedy and complete recovery!

  • Laura - 2012-06-01 19:12

My family does not live very far and go there often I am happy that they got what they deserve sympathies to the guards well done guys

  • luytster - 2012-06-01 19:25

We as citizens of Durban demand the re-in statement of the Cato manor organized crime squad. We are not stupid and blind as to why this unit was disbanded. They were incorruptable and got to close to the truth about Bheki,Roux and roux's accomplice in crime KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Mmamonnye Ngobeni and her curry mafia freinds

  • Ditoa-re - 2012-06-01 19:30

Wake them up so they will point their friends and bring all of them so I shoot them again

  • mzwa.chiliza - 2012-06-01 19:37

If the officers working at Cato Manor were still working as a group, this robbery wouldn't have taken place. All the criminals aspecially robbers were bloody scared of the Cato Manor squad.I work in Durban,I know what I'm talking about. The Cato Manor would have known about the robbery before it got executed, they had good informers.the management of the Saps in Kzn shoot form another group to replace the Cato Manor squad, klaar.

      kelvin.masuku - 2012-06-03 03:26

Its poverty n greed that drives crime but remember people 4get about \inside job gone wrong\-honestly I didn't think of a robbery in gateway with its all sophisticated cctv coverage.I see everyday security with radios only n wonder how we can say we r safe come these brazen heists guys-i don't have an old mutual insurance but love da centre-an appeal 2 managment 2 do something!!offcourse da cato guys had their successes but they wouldn't have covered all the policing alone

  • bevnisha.govindsamy - 2012-06-01 19:57

Credit to the police and credit to the Government who have given the shoot to kill mandate to the police so that this vermin can be removed from society. We are talking about Africa not the U.K, in Africa democracy is practiced at the end of a gun barrel because talk does not work.
