Durban - A Durban man is grateful to be alive after robbers viciously beat him, assaulted him with hammers and tried to cut off his finger to steal his wedding ring.

Lighting designer Douglas Gordon, 55, of Hillcrest told The Mercury he was at home alone on Tuesday when four men attacked him, using tools the family had lying around for their home renovations.

Gordon’s wife was away on a school trip and his children are based in the Western Cape.

He was gagged and lost consciousness several times. They tried to suffocate him with a pillow.

One of the robbers tried to cut off his finger to get his wedding ring. As the finger started bleeding the ring began slipping off and he gave it to them.

The robbers were furious that there was no money in the house and that the safe only contained documents.

“The man with the gun told me to get on my knees and he shoved the gun down my throat. I thought I was going to die,” said Gordon.

The gunman apparently made racist remarks and told Gordon to “say goodbye”.

“I prayed and I don’t know if the gun jammed or what happened, but it did not go off.”

The men fled in his car.
