Rock fall closes Chapman's Peak Drive

2011-07-28 10:19
Cape Town - Chapman's Peak Drive in Cape Town was closed on Thursday morning after a rock fell on the road, the provincial department of transport and public works said.

"This constituted a Level 4 fall, seen as a high-risk rock fall that requires an immediate road closure, followed by a detailed assessment to determine the origin point of the rock," Western Cape transport MEC Robin Carlisle said.

"Heavy rainfalls on the pass have thus far prevented our abseiling team from making an ascent. They will proceed as soon as the rain has subsided."

The assessment would take a further 24 hours.

Carlisle said there had been multiple rock falls last week, but the road was not closed as they had all landed in a "drop zone".
