Rugby player shot in hijacking

2011-07-18 09:26

Bloemfontein - A 23-year-old rugby player is in a serious condition in hospital on Monday after being shot in the neck during a hijacking in Bloemfontein, Free State police said.

Captain Chaka Marope said Marnus Briedenhann, 23, who plays for the Griffons rugby team, was hijacked by two armed men in Westdene, Bloemfontein in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"They forced him to drive to Naval Hill... he tried to escape and that's when they shot him in the neck," said Marope.

A passer-by called an ambulance for Briedenhann, who played against the Falcons in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, at the weekend.

Meanwhile, the police's patrolling unit spotted his car at a filling station in Botshabelo and a shoot-out ensued.

The hijackers ran away but the car was recovered.

Beeld newspaper said Briedenhann was a cousin of Afrikaans comedian Al Debbo who died aged 87 last week.

Once again......another average day in SA! Is it not so sad, that you can be in the 'wrong place, at the wrong time' in any God given corner of SA! This is so not on! These criminal pigs must really be taught a lesson, trying to take something away from someone that they have worked so hard for - and if that fails.....they shoot you????????? SICK, SICK, SICK - TO MY GUT!

      cliffarc - 2011-07-18 11:18

      - How's the crime stat's looking Cele ?

      The Spear - 2011-07-18 11:48

CvdH - really this is your best examples? How many people get shot by random strangers in NZ for their cars or belongings? Come on...you can't even compare the crime statistics. In SA we have 34 murders for each 100,000 of the population. In NZ it is 2.2 murders per 100,000 of the population. Never mind attempted murders etc.

      Eric West - 2011-07-18 12:14

      Happy Madiba Day - NOT!!!!

      Orcanda - 2011-07-18 12:52

Maybe he is one of the criminals who what to justify his crime. I just watch a programme Kiwi Lewe on Kyknet and seriously you can see the piece on the Expats from SA faces. No fear, so relaxed and extremely happy. The children are happy and they feel safe. So much for your examples CvdH.

      Orcanda - 2011-07-18 12:57

      I meant peace not piece

      daaivark - 2011-07-18 13:39

      Well said CvdH.

      cliffarc - 2011-07-18 13:48

-@ CvdH - Tell you what bud, we'd gladly swap our crime rate with both Aus and NZ.

WHO WANTS TO GUESS THE RACE/COLOUR OF THE HIJACKERS. I'M LEANING TOWARDS AA/BEE.

      Wes - 2011-07-18 17:54

@De le Rey Now thats a stupid comment that Julius would be proud of. Most criminals are black because they are the majority in the country. In England most criminals are white. Bloody crackers, why don't they get a job!

      Raymond - 2011-07-18 19:48

It is not an average day in SA,this is just a normal day in company of Barbarians. This is the mentality and culture of this country. It does make one nauseous.Since 1994,it seems that the doors of hell was opened and the DEVILS were set free.

      common-cents - 2011-07-18 20:04

@Wes - your comment regarding colour of criminals in the UK; the "non white" demographic is responsible for the great majority of knife and gun crime which of course is most likely to be fatal. General crime including shoplifting and white collar crime yes, white will overtake and become the majority but just to put your comment into perspective. I live in the UK and know this to be absolute fact. If you had to look at number of criminals per capita by demographic then this is skewed even more. Not quite as bad as the USA where a black kid is more likely to go to jail than university but nearly as bad. Excuses for a fault more culturally fundamental i fear

      Bloubul Jonck - 2011-07-19 00:07

@wes this is bull in england yout majority of prisonars are black. de la rey for president

      Meanleader - 2011-07-22 16:48

@Daaivark ...altyd dwars met almal ne' . Sounds like you need a bit of legover son . Neurotic old men should go comment on Bowling or knitting , not the real matters of society ...you are out of date !!!

  • saabnut - 2011-07-18 09:46

I hope he makes a full and speedy recovery. The short term solution- The death penalty. There is no value for human life in this country where violent crime is concerned.

      WhoSaidWhat - 2011-07-18 11:25

@MadWoman...... I am not sure why you are so worried about bringing back the death penalty. I doubt that most of us commenting on this site are worried about getting on death row. You should only be worried about getting your ass on death row if you kill, hijack and/or rape etc... Which it sounds like might be an issue for you?

      - @ GreatWomanHZ - I think you're forgetting the govt's biggest priority - . . . . Corruption !!

      Wes - 2011-07-18 17:56

Are you sure you want the ANC being in charge of the death penalty?

      Raymond - 2011-07-18 19:54

If the death penalty is brought back, there will definately be a dramatic decrease in the population. This means less votes. So yes,I agree that the death penalty should be brought back, but don't hold your breath. All you will hear is talk, talk and more talk but no action.

Nothing is going to change in this country, as much as we would like to, it's just the opposite, it will even get worse over time. One must be afraid to shoot one of this F$*^ers, otherwise you yourself will end up in Jail and the Hijacker is out on Bail, if the ever catch him of course.

In this country there is a high percentage chance that the thugs are in fact cops

  • Ederik - 2011-07-18 11:28

This is a super young man from a wonderful family whose life has been altered for ever by useless trash. His father drowned three years ago while saving a person from drowning at sea. I pray for him and his family.

      Orcanda - 2011-07-18 13:04

Santapola then you must start praying that God will forgive you for your hatred, tribalisme, nepotism, murders that you commited or maybe going to commit, stealing from others.. Believe me God wont forigve if you cant even forgive. By the way most were not even born in the apartheid era..why must they pray for forgiveness? Your must start praying to come clean for what your ANC racist murdere gans are bussy doing in South Africa to innocent citizens of this country Example...Farm Murders, theft of property that was ligitemate for to a bank, raping, corruption, thieving of state money, racist remarks by your ANCYL. Shall I carry on? Hypocrite!!!!!!

  • Markie - 2011-07-18 12:19

  • NZdreamer - 2011-07-18 13:44

@CvdH!! What? Are you for real? Yes, NZ has crime, but when there is crime, it makes HEADLINES! Do not be a total idiot, you cannot compare the two Countries at all! High jackings in NZ - maybe a couple a year?? Most crime is drug/booze related - or family disputes.....You can still drive with you wallet, mobile phone on the seat, sleep without ADT, high walls, guard dogs, hell, most homes do not even have fences... etc.....kids can still play in parks, without adult supervision, we can still walk to the shop with our wallets in our hands, we can still drive around at 2am and not worry that someone is lurking in our driveway, we can still stroll on our beaches at 9pm - and the list goes on and on and on.......do not rake crap into the whole SA situation that is WAY OUT OF CONTROL and make yourself feel better - cause, it ain't so! NOT RUNNING UP TO AN UNSUSPECTING DRIVER WITH A GUN, OR MARCHING INTO YOUR HOME WITH GUNS/KNIVES - here our farmers do not get shot!! - Geez, you need to catch a wake up mate!! Do not put down what you do not know!

      CvdH - 2011-07-19 10:50

@NZDreamer.... exactly what you are... a dreamer. Happy dreaming and happy living on a volcano- and earthquake-timebomb, sexual assualts galore & admitted by NZ papers, a youth so out of control its freightening, drugs galore, an economy with out hope, etc. HAppy dreaming Dreamer!

      MadWomanHellenZille - 2011-07-18 14:57

The same way we WHITE chose any other story to do the same thing, I am really tired of us(whites) trying to blame blacks for racist. We must be careful what we say because if Malema becomes a President, we might be left countryless

  • lassie95 - 2011-07-18 14:08

Bheki I must say one thing in your favour. You made an attempt to read the article. Not that you understand it though. What has Helen Zille got to do with the hijacking? You are even dumber than Malema!

      MadWomanHellenZille - 2011-07-18 14:46

@lassie95 you correct I don't have anything to do with this. Next time you will be calling me a RACIST Mad Woman Hellen Zille, but guess what thus who I am. You can't change me I was born white

      Andy - 2011-07-18 14:59

@MadWoman... the real Helen Zille would firstly spell her name correctly and secondly would speak proper english. Go back to school before commenting on this web application.

      Andy - 2011-07-18 15:03

Sounds like your all for the violence in SA? top notch comment, i wonder if you would post the same comment if it was one of your black brothers being shot? Seriously doubt it you racist piece of trash. Now get back to being lazy, you've probably already done more work typing that comment then your used to.

      grimbie1 - 2011-07-18 17:17

dumb nut... what if it were your own brother or sister shot. Surely its not about colour or race. Its the fact that a normal person was SHOT.. yes SHOT.. if that happens anywhere its wrong no matter if its black white or any other.. shooting people is wrong. When are you going tosee its not about race and the more you segregate it the further you will become from an internationall recognized country. WE ARE ALL MADE FROM THE SAME AND COME FROM ONE..

      Wendy - 2011-07-19 06:25

  • Viking - 2011-07-18 14:57

      MadWomanHellenZille - 2011-07-18 19:02

Nope, because she is at the same level as me but slightly lower in IQ

  • Zorro - 2011-07-18 16:17

      grimbie1 - 2011-07-18 17:18

exactly that.. the chance of being caught are almost none.

IF any of you lot where sincere in your remarks you would not have missed the break-through point that SA and especially the SAPS had been lacking for the past few years, and that is the vehicle was spotted and police took action. As a result the vehicle was recovered, it is sad the suspects escaped but it is a step in the right direction none-the-less. If you werent so obsessed with NZ & Aus, you would realise our police are finally stepping up to the plate and playing a meaningful role, and for that they have to be congratulated.
