Johannesburg - Two South African consulate officials based in New York have been dispatched to Boston, the international relations and co-operation department said on Tuesday following the Boston marathon blasts.

"They will help deal with the incident and assist South Africans on the ground," said spokesperson Clayson Monyela.

"They will also monitor and update the story as it develops and check if any other South Africans were injured."

The officials would be in touch with Boston authorities and hospitals to check on the injured.

Monyela said two South African athletes were injured in the twin blasts on Monday.

"We can confirm only two injuries. We will update the information during the day," he said.
He was unable to say whether they were badly injured.
