New York - Well-known local designer David Tlale and US publicist Kelly Cutrone, who helped organise the flamboyant South African’s New York show, cut ties after the latter claimed he owed her money.

Cutrone pulled out just hours before Tlale’s New York Fashion Week show kicked off and sent a statement to more than 100 VIP and media guests who she had invited stating that her company, People’s Revolution, was cancelling their participation in Tlale’s show as they had not been paid, reported the Sunday Times.

Tlale hit back however and said the spat was not the issue of non-payment but merely an egotistical, impatient diva publicist who demanded full payment 48 hours before delivery of services. His team however, kicked into high gear in order to rescue the event.

Tlale lauded

In 2009 Tlale was congratulated for his achievements by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe in a Heritage Day speech which stressed the role of the arts in South Africa's growth and healing.

"His illustrious designs have earned him a great respect as a fashion designer and role model both at home and abroad," said Motlanthe, in a speech prepared for delivery at the Ntwampe Sports Grounds in Moroke, Limpopo.

Tlale took his 2010 collection to the prestigious New York Fashion Week in September of that year titling the presentation "Cultural Intimacy".

"Once again, his achievements point to the countless new opportunities opened for our talented artists," said Motlanthe of the designer.

He said that: "At the same time that we focus on matters of providing basic services like housing, water and electricity, it is of lasting benefit to cherish the positive story of our rich cultural heritage.

"As you would recall, it was our songs, our poetry and through the arts that we marshalled the struggle for the liberation of our country."
