Johannesburg - South Africa has been elected as the chair of the African Correctional Services Association (ACSA), the correctional services department said on Sunday.

"We are extremely delighted that South Africa has been elected chair of ACSA. By electing SA as Chair, ACSA recognises the significant role played by our country in this important African institution," Correctional Services Minister Sbu Ndebele said in a statement released by the department.

"We will use our position on ACSA to enhance correctional services on the continent."

Correctional Services national commissioner Tom Moyane was elected chairperson of ACSA at the four-day Biennial Conference hosted by the Uganda Prisons Service, in Kampala from 2 to 5 October.

The conference was attended by more than 24 representatives of various countries.

South Africa has held the position of secretariat of ACSA for the past two years.
