SA gives R2m to Palestinian body

2012-10-09 17:30

Johannesburg - South Africa will contribute R2m to the UN agency that helps Palestinian refugees, Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim said on Tuesday.

"A contribution of R2m is being made towards the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA)," he said in a statement.

Ebrahim said UNRWA was the largest and only agency established by the United Nations (UN) to carry out direct relief and work programmes for Palestine refugees living in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip.

"The mission of UNRWA is to help Palestine refugees achieve their full potential in human development under the difficult circumstances in which they live."

UNRWA provides services such as education, health, relief, social services, microfinance, community support, and emergency aid to over five million registered Palestine refugees in the Middle East, Ebrahim said.

"South Africa contributes annually to the agency and other UN humanitarian agencies in accordance with its commitment to the alleviation of human suffering through international humanitarian assistance."

South Africa contributed to UNRWA in line with a UN resolution that encourages members to support the agency.

"In the absence of a durable solution to the Palestine refugee problem, the UN General Assembly has repeatedly renewed UNRWA's mandate, most recently extending it until 30 June 2014," Ebrahim said.

now i'm not saying dont give to the "needy" outside SA, but really...??? charity begins at home. i think our international relations office should be honest to the UN , AU , IMF, etc about what's really happening at home instead of frontin'..actin' like all is well and always being ready to contribute when the South African people are lacking basic needs. maybe the UN will ask for donations like books, etc, from the well off countries so we can give them to school kids before exams since the government aint planning on doing so.

Zeepolar, Yes, there is such an apathetic attitude to the realities of our own need in South Africa.

Does anybody ever give us anything??? We gave Cuba a Billion, Mugabe who knows how much? Not like we don't need it here. Squatters, beggars, etc. I think the black elite don't even know there are poor people in this country, they certainly don't seem to care.

      zapadela.tistarocha - 2012-10-09 18:07

Obviously you know each ""Black elite"" personally to summize their state of mind towards the poor........Obviously

Well done RSA, Like our past, immersed in oppression, we as a country must ensure others being oppressed are allowed a future.

This Israel you speak of was the British mandate of palestine just recently till the ""good ol' English"" like they have done throughout this planet decided to breed a new country...much like Pakistan. History also states that Israel has annexed more of Palestine since the English deed and amazingly to this day the world looks the other way whilst the Israelis' have colonized these illegitimately gained Land.

The British gave the mandate to the palestinian people for their support against Germany in the first world war. They then gave the same mandate to the Jews of palestine for the same deal in the second world war. Jews and Palestinians have lived in peace for centuries untill the Brits divided and conquered. Brittain voted against the forming of a Zionist state. They did all they could to prevent it. Israel was attacked repeatedly by the so called league of Arab Nations, who have vowed to destroy it. In doing so, the League has lost ground which Israel, rightfully occupied and settled.

The things this government will do to win over the Cape Town muslim vote.. Pathetic. Take care of the farking economic/education/security refugees in our own country first.

The irony of all this is that Arafat stole billions from his own people and they had to negotiate with his wife to find out where it was to try and get some back. And Gadaffi stole $200 billion from his people. Let us give to people whose language we don't even speak. I'm missing something here???

The mind bogles at how our government spends our taxpayer money. Do we not have a major need in our country. Over the past years the government has given away billions which could have been used for upliftment in SA. We really have a strange government who continually waste or spend public funds on projects that do not benefit our own needy.
