Johannesburg - A South African man was killed during hostilities in Iraq, the department of foreign affairs said on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said the man was killed in Kut, in the south of Iraq.
"Circumstances that led to his death are being investigated," he said.
The man's name cannot be released until his next of kin have been advised.
Earlier reports from Baghdad said the man, who had worked for a British security company, had died when the house he was living in with other contractors was attacked by Shiite militia forces.
