SA man shot in Somalia 'a family man'

2012-04-30 10:07

Pretoria - The South African man who was shot dead in Puntland last Friday had gone to Somalia so that he could take better care of his family.

A friend of Lodewyk (Lood) Pietersen, 55, told Beeld that his friend was a devoted family man who hated to go away from home.

Pietersen, a security trainer from Klerksdorp, was working for Saracen International in Somalia helping the Puntland maritime police fight piracy in the Bari province.

Sapa reported that he was apparently killed by his bodyguard following an argument. The government of semi-autonomous Puntland has launched an investigation into the incident.

Arrie Helberg said he had been surprised to hear of Pietersen going to Somalia.

Pietersen retired from the army a few years ago and started a financial business with his wife Nelia. They had a son.

In a separate incident, another South African was kidnapped along with several other foreigners while demining a road in Southern Sudan.

This is a direct result of the ANC's racist AA policies! Skilled whites are forced out of their jobs and have no other option but to take on jobs like these. RIP

@Eric - No, this dude was just a mercenary. The company he worked for Saracen International is about one of the dodgiest company's anyone can work for. On the same line as Back Water.

RIP. Condolences to your family and friends. Hope those who have been abducted are released unharmed soon. Surely Somalia is Africa's biggest shame? Other African countries (think they call themselves the AU?) should pull their fingers out of their *rses and do something to help that region. There again, maybe they're all too busy debating where they should eat their cake to be concerned about a country as insignificant as Somalia.

@spartanx93 - do you have any facts to back up your claim? Do you have any idea what a mercenary is or do you just usually shoot of your mouth without getting facts?
