SA murder rate drops 3%

2012-09-20 10:41

Cape Town - South Africa's murder rate has dropped by 3.1% in the past financial year, Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa announced on Thursday.

Releasing the 2011/12 annual crime statistics at Parliament, Mthethwa said more than 18 000 people were murdered in 2004/5, and this was now down to less than 16 000.

There had been a 27.6% reduction over an eight year period - 2004/5 to 2011/12, he said.

Sexual offences dropped by 3.7%.

"We need to emphasise that, as government, we are, however, still concerned about the scourge of rape in our country.

"Rape decreased [by] 1.9%, but is [still] unacceptably high," Mthethwa said.

Goodone - waiting for more...*especially HIJACKING*

      willemdaniel.venter - 2012-09-20 10:51

You mean you actually believe these statistics?? Mm..

      schalk.mattheys - 2012-09-20 11:20

And we are expected to believe these stats!? It's common knowledge that a large percentage of crimes don't ever get reported. Distrust of the police (surprise surprise) apathy based on whether or not the police officer will actually file a docket once a crime is reported, non response of police when a crime is reported, ie. no police even pitch up after being called. etc. etc. My parents who are pensioners were burgled recently, dog poisoned, belongings stolen etc. On reporting the crime to the police, it took 2 hours for an officer to arrive. They live 80 meters from the Somerset West main police station. And even if these stats are remotely accurate...so what!? SA still has insane murder and rape stats! everyone I know, and I mean everyone, has been a victim in some way or another of crime in the last 6 months. Take these stats and shove them, the government doesn't care about combating crime! And lets not even talk about corrupt "top-cops" who doctor crime stats to make things look more rosy...

      andrew.hendrikse - 2012-09-20 13:02

The murder rate has gone from very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very bad to very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very bad. ps: dont waste your time counting ,it's just one "very" less!

Our crime stats will have to be verified by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. Last year the audit was fine - let's hope this year's is too. What happens is the UN Office check mortuary records, to verify the murders. Read http://www.issafrica.org/crimehub/ for analysis of crime. Lizette Lancaster will write a report following confirmation from the UN that the stats are accurate. There is probably under-reporting of rape stats from rural areas and cases where car-jackings have been listed as normal robberies. Crime is still unacceptably high. It makes sense that it has fallen a bit as the percentage of people out of work or without welfare has fallen (mainly the latter category as unemployment is static). The ANC need to do a lot more to improve crime. There are areas where it is safe to walk around at night but that is still the EXCEPTION to the rule. Most places are no-go areas at night!

I hate to belittle South Africa and I sure as hell don't believe this police boss or a word he says and the stats that he puts out, however I've been watching actor Ross Kemp's documentary on Sky 1 "Extreme World" and despite how some people like to knock over South Africa for how bad the country is,I have yet to see our country depicted in that documentary by Kemp. Mexico,Chicago,Haiti,Democratic Republic of Congo,Karachi,London,Venezuela,Glasgow,New Orleans are featured in that programme, but where is South Africa.Maybe its on another more sinister programme than that if you can find one. That program of Kemp investigates illegal drugs trade, where Kemp interviews drug dealers who are brutal murderers and gets a close-up perspective of the addicts. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo,Kemp looks at child labour and hostile, overcrowded prisons. In Mexico,Kemp looks at their infamous drug trade and gang culture. In Haiti,Kemp looks at the sinister side of gun culture. And in London its the same thing Kemp looks at. Still it don't excuse our terrible situation, but at least we not tarred with the same brush as some other places.

      thandiwe.ngema.71 - 2012-09-20 13:31

I very much doubt the ANC can DELIVER stats that pull the wool in front of the eyes of the United Nations Office on Drugs on Crime.. ie I don't think they are capable enough to hide stats from them..

      hugh.robinson.56 - 2012-09-20 16:24

Of the brain dead forget that the method of recording crimes has changed twice in the same period. Assault for instance is broken into a number of sub categories.

  • clifford.sithole.5 - 2012-09-20 10:46

16 000 is still nothing to smile about.

  • teddy.beer.319 - 2012-09-20 10:46

What an 'improvement'! We managed to kill 16000 of our own and we are so very proud of the 'improvement'! This country my broda, this country!

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-09-20 10:49

Cops cook crime rate figures and so does Mthethwa. He is still silent about the mineworkers that got killed. Actually he should have resigned, but that is not the in thing with jellly babies.

    buuuuuuuullllllssssssshhhhhhhheeeeeeeeetttttt!!!!!

  • marc.klynhans - 2012-09-20 10:50

This guy went to school in Limpopo.

      geoff.march.9 - 2012-09-20 11:40

Did he actually go to school at all? If my mathematics are correct, a drop of 2000 murders from 18,000 in 2004/5 to 16,000 in 2011/12 equates to a drop of around 11% not 27,6% as stated by Mr Mthethwa.

      marc.klynhans - 2012-09-20 12:12

      Exactly my point.

  • JuliusYouPrick - 2012-09-20 10:54

Don't even bother with statistics because we don't believe anything you say.

  • TheyTookMyNickLaZynEko - 2012-09-20 10:55

    UTTER NONSENSE.

  • roger.hess.14 - 2012-09-20 10:55

Keeping the margin of error due to the recognized math literacy issues we have in mind and putting the number at 16,000 over a full year, that still comes out to an average of 43.8 murders per day. I think Columbia still has a higher murder rate per day thanks to FARC; but Iraq and Afghanistan have less even though both are war zones.

  • barry.smit.773 - 2012-09-20 11:00

    God is moving!

      Havokreeka - 2012-09-20 13:15

Yeah, only 16 000 were raped in SA because of his "Divine Will" instead of 18 000. What a generous and loving "God"

  • heini.botes - 2012-09-20 11:00

Your statistics is about as reliable as my knowledge on space traveling

      nompumelelo.madonda - 2012-09-20 11:06

      LOL!!!! Very funny @ heini!!

      heini.botes - 2012-09-20 11:19

      @nompumelelo....hehehe

  • brendan.young.752 - 2012-09-20 11:18

Let's assume the stats are correct: in 7 years only 2000 people have been saved from murder. I suppose it says that something is being done but that's small comfort to the 16000 familes that grieve for their loss. 7 years and only 3% drop? Its embarassing really; I'd have kept it to myself in any case.

  • tony.naidoo - 2012-09-20 11:50

And Zoombie murdered the Rand by another 5.5% !

  • frankflower - 2012-09-20 11:59

You seem quite happy, mr Mthethwa... This is not something to be proud of, there should be NO murder rate...

  • RyanG - 2012-09-20 12:23

I dont believe any stats, they are all crooked (These stats are probably based on 1 secure comlex or area). Is CPI really 5% for August ? Is crime really down ? The real picture I see everyday doesn't agree with the stats. My rates went up 7.6% (just one of a alot of outrages increases), 3 out of 12 houses have been robbed in my street (ratio 1:4)

  • diane.edwards.1048 - 2012-09-20 12:25

Yeah right we suppose to believe this s%it!

  • gert.theunissen.3 - 2012-09-20 12:34

    Well done you dumb ass

  • Badger - 2012-09-20 13:25

"Ja Sure, and there is no corruption in our country either"

  • francois.olivier.108 - 2012-09-20 13:42

Still more than 43 persons murdered every single day of the year

  • braamc - 2012-09-20 13:46

Step down your useless thing. This is absolute rubbish, really think we believe this

  • teleki.maker - 2012-09-20 14:56

Mthethwa,a decrease from 18000 to 16000,rounding-off to thousands i am sure.Man, we need exact figures here we speaking of innocent souls that we have lost here,u crazy.u should learn how to value things, this not you fat bank account.

  • MuttleyScholtz - 2012-09-20 15:24

These stats are not true. I know of many people who were affected by crime but didn't even bother to report it because the police department is so unhelpful. Especially the one in Potchefstroom. Do not go there. You are bothering them and they show it. What a waste of money. It is not the ANC that is lowering crime, it is their stats that are worsening.

  • johan.jacobs.5680 - 2012-09-20 18:52

    Home coocked stats.

  • John - 2012-09-25 11:49

2011 16040 murders.\r\n2012 15069 murders\r\n331 fewer murders this year is a reduction of 2% and this year is partly over! 9 months. Why do WE have to be fed this bull manure???

      jomardl - 2012-09-25 11:58

The stats apply to a 12 month period, not measured from Jan to Dec.

  • sharon.messina.10 - 2013-01-24 15:32

Can we believe this ?????????? Very strange that ALL the crime stats dropped !!!!when people are complaining about SAPS every day...every hour...every minut...every second.....every splitsecond
