SA peacekeeper killed in Sudan ambush

2012-10-18 07:37

Johannesburg - A South African peacekeeper was killed and three others were wounded in an ambush in North Darfur, the department of international relations confirmed on Thursday.

"These brave South Africans were serving as part of the African Union/United Nations peacekeeping mission in Sudan," spokesperson Clayson Monyela said.

The South African government appealed to the Sudanese government to probe the armed ambush.

Monyela extended the government's condolences to the man's family and said consular support would be provided.

No further details were immediately available.

Earlier, Agence France Presse reported that the peacekeeper was killed when the convoy he was travelling in was ambushed.

The convoy, comprising police, military and civilian UNAMID (African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur) staff, was on its way to investigate reports of violence in Hashaba village.

United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon requested an investigation into the attack.

His spokesperson Martin Nesirky said: "The secretary general expresses his condolences to the government of the Republic of South Africa, UNAMID and to the family of the fallen peacekeeper".

Salute? SA is the country with the highest murder rate in the world, but we send our people to go and protect foreigners. These people should be deployed to prevent farm murders.

@JohnSmit. The level of selfishness within your response is shocking. What are YOU doing to protect people in SA? What is YOUR contribution to SA? Negativity! A young man. 22 years old. MY brother. Died fighting for a cause dear to his heart. All he wanted was peace between people. He wanted to help others that couldn't help themselves! I highly doubt that the contribution you're making to the safety of SA citizens is significant. That's if you're even trying to protect us... Let my brothers soul R.I.P please. We have suffered enough.

South Africa has a responsibility to the continent of Africa instability in our continent is of no benefit to us and needs to be delt with. My respect to the fallen soldier and condolenses to his family. It takes a brave man to die fighting for something he believes. RIP.
