Port Elizabeth - An SA Express flight from Port Elizabeth to Durban had to make an emergency landing on Wednesday after the windscreen cracked about 8 500m above sea level.

The plane was forced to land in East London, reported Beeld.

“It was the most terrifying moment of my life,” said champion cyclist Anriëtte Schoeman, one of the passengers on the flight.

“The air pressure felt very strange and oxygen masks fell from the roof. That is when they announced that we would have to do an emergency landing in East London due to cabin pressure and a cracked windscreen.”

The windscreen apparently cracked on the side of the flight captain, Karen Essery.

“We were all terribly rattled, but the staff reassured us with a safe landing.”

Schoeman was on her way to take part in the Sani2C-mountain bike race in Underberg, KwaZulu-Natal.

Passengers later flew to Durban from Johannesburg on another plane.

An SA Express spokesperson said no one was injured in the incident and that the windscreen would be replaced before the plane took to the air again.
