SA remains 'world rape capital'

2012-09-21 20:02

Johannesburg - Sexual offence statistics in South Africa were still too high, the National Freedom Party said on Friday.

"We note that while sex-related crimes... decreased by just more than one percent, these crimes still remain very high as compared to global figures and South Africa remains the rape capital of the world," NFP president Zanele KaMagwaza-Msibi said.

She welcomed an overall decrease in crime reflected in the latest statistics released by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa on Thursday.

Msibi said sexual crimes were not always reported.

"We call on the government to provide safe shelters for the elderly and orphans, especially in rural areas, as these sections of our population are the most vulnerable to sexual crimes," she said.

Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) spokesperson Theto Mahlakoana said the union was encouraged by the reduced figures but felt that murder figures were still too high.

The murder rate had dropped by just over three percent.

A total of 15 609 murders were recorded in 2011/2012, compared to 15 940 the previous year.

"We are also equally disturbed by the high rate of recorded sexual offences," Mahlakoana said in a statement.

The union said that the frequency of child rapes, in particular, were cause for alarm.

"This is monstrous and we appeal to all South Africans to reclaim a more dignified society that isn't riddled by such ills."

Despite it being absolutely shocking, one has to give credit where credit is due to the majority of the SA population! Well done guys, you've made SA look vile, yet again.

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-21 20:45

The biggest crisis our nation faces is the mental health crisis - and it is the one that will receive the least attention. Murdering and raping females (and I use the gender term rather than "women" because of the many female children being raped, abused and murdered)seems to be perceived as a right. There are very many sick people in our dysfunctional society. And some of that dysfunction lies squarely at the door of cultural beliefs vs The Charter and The Constitution. These two documents vs cultural beliefs and tribal laws (and tribal courts and all the tribal legislation around that), has served only to create a unique form of schizophrenia. Females are still largely regarded as property, not people. Until all of society, the formal courts, traditional courts stop treating rape as a misdemeanour instead of the outrageous human rights abuse that it is, ZA will continue to be the rape capital of the world

      byron.jay.37 - 2012-09-21 20:48

Certainly vile humor aforesaid... The probability that a violent crime will happen to one, if I am correct, is "0.3" - "A 30% chance", if we use the stats of 2011/2012 (15 609 violent crimes recorded) and the 2011 stats of SA's total population (50 586 757 people). Credit due...to those who could help stop a crime. This is no reason to express vile humor, we are not doing enough to help our people mitigate their desperation in times of survival. It starts with you.

      fumani.khosa.10 - 2012-09-21 20:51

People learn from the best. As long as so called prominent figures get away with it people will continue takin their chances and unfortunately victims will remain 'victims of circumstances'...

      danie.strydom.7 - 2012-09-21 21:00

      Yup, F**KED by the ANC

@byron.jay.37 : Your maths is wrong.

      husaberg.twostroke - 2012-09-21 22:44

No wonder just look at the daily actions of the so called masses.

      bless.boswell - 2012-09-22 09:20

Thank you Fumani - you hit the nail on the head!! Rape - our national sport, endorsed by our president. It would be interesting to investigate whether Zuma's rape activities have spurred others in to repeat this vile act.

      bless.boswell - 2012-09-22 09:21

Byron, it should start with Zuma - he set the example!

      rbphiri - 2012-09-22 14:00

It's no suprise there! Every single South African has been forcefully screwed by the government in some form. They government promised to make the crime rate subside, they said they would impose lengthier prison sentences for offenders, but instead the president dishes out remission of sentences. The ruling party is full of equivocations! Politics is the art of making it sound as if Father Christmas comes earlier in the year. Start purchasing KY jelly people, because with the e-toll we going to be screwed even further!

      gert.swart.393 - 2012-11-07 20:54

SA is in desperate need of education to get rid of the 3 evils: rasicm, religion (including african traditional religion) and ethnicity/tribalism/ethnic culture. Only then will we become free and save!

      KevvyW - 2012-11-07 21:39

Lacrimosewolf- Agreed...Mental issues is the heart of this all.

  • march54 - 2012-09-21 20:12

Definitely not a title to be proud of. How many sex crimes go unreported due to the shame of the victim? Too many cases go unpunished and those that reach the courts not punished enough. Sexual assaults of minors and the elderly should get life sentences.

      squeegee.pilot - 2012-09-21 20:24

More go unreported than are reported. Some say only 10-20% are reported... Scary!

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-21 21:07

Sexual Assaults full stop should get a life sentence. This is behaviour that not even the finest science, psychology, psychiatry or drugs in the whole world has ever been able to remedy. And all the benign laws of mitigating circumstance - 1st offence, 2nd offence, on drugs, drunk, angry because I lost my job, the food wasn't ready, she wore a mini-skirt, make-up, smiled or didn't smile, the gang made me do it, etc - give tacit approval of what is human rights abuse under The Charter and under The Constitution.

      wesley.nel.5 - 2012-09-22 05:46

If there were a Olympics for that, we could then get our 40 gold medals

      croix.mactee - 2012-09-22 06:53

Yet, Mtetwa and his government seems quite proud and satisfied with the latest stats. If you are connected, a rape case can take years to be brought before a court - by which time the file is either 'lost' or so obfuscated it can not be finalised. Thus the victims and their families are steamrollered and shamed by our slack-ar$&d, lazy and INCOMPETENT investigating officers and judiciary. But, NOOOO reason to pass up that next fat pay-rise and even smarter 7-series, is it now. Just doctor the stats a bit, and the totally gullible 'masses' will shoo you in for another term of looting and the 'grand' lifestyle you are so used to? I am so SICK of your hyena-style of entitlement.

  • Mandy Casey - 2012-09-21 21:03

I am sure that our government and law enforcement agencies won't rest until we have improved to at least 2nd highest statistic in world. We don't want to be highest. Great country for women and girls to grow up.

      lacrimosewolf - 2012-09-21 21:39

Too many females in our country ever get to grow up. Either because their physical lives are taken or they are robbed of their souls, their dignity, their self-esteem because of an absurd legal and traditional belief system

  • raul.curado.1 - 2012-09-21 22:00

I am sure that tonight, through their lips they are now sipping Champagne on our behalf for the "great achievement". There are still over 16 000 murders every year in South Africa and Johannesburg is a world class city dont forget. Is the minister in the photograph extending his hand too us, hoping to be congratulate for the achievment?

  • whatda.fuqbro - 2012-09-21 23:16

What kind of rape stats do you expect when the country's president is a rapist?

  • johan.wilsnach - 2012-09-21 23:56

Miniter MTHETHWA, may I remind you that no one on this planet ever succeeded in fighting, or waging wars against crime. Only ignorant people talk this way. Ask the Americans how successful they were on their war against drugs. They failed dismally. What needs to be done is to hone in on crime prevention. This is the only effective tool you have. Maintenance of law and order goes hand in hand, but then you should know this.

  • Erna - 2012-09-22 00:02

All these feeble and politically correct responses from political parties is really discouraging. I expect outrage and plans to stop this violence amongst our people but what do we get? Polite rhetoric.

  • juannepierre - 2012-09-22 02:49

    Straight men are disgusting.

      siphom.mnguni - 2012-09-22 05:03

Not all of us will turn gay just because of those stupid rapists who are unable to keep their libido in check. Juannepierre, from your comment I presume you are not a straight man, don't you think you are inviting negative response from some of us which you will later term homophobic? Why paint all of us with the same brush?

      peters.rapula - 2012-09-22 05:35

hw many ladies out there who lied about being raped, hence they were i des together.

      Like wise, soddomy is disgusting!

  • The-Azanian - 2012-09-22 06:07

Education and teaching families how to raise boys into gentlemans is the way to go for a new south africa...research showed that educated males raised by well mannered parents are less likely to be involved any form of rape and violent crimes. And same goes for educated ladies, they are less fertile than uneducated ones (proof: an average gauteng/western cape lady has 1-3 kids versus an average eastern cape/kzn/limpopo lady who has 3-5 kids) which is good for the country and they are more independent even when married and less likely to withstand someone crushing their human rights.

  • David Liebenberg - 2012-09-22 07:11

They must bring back the death penalty!!! U destroyed a humans live yours should then be destroyed. Who in his right mind rape's a 5year old???? come on that is sick!!

  • hein.huyser - 2012-09-22 07:14

The proud legacy of the cANCer unleashed on us. Time for a complete change in government, by a ruling party that leads the way in its fight against this curse. You can not have a political leader standing guilty of this crime and then expect uneducated followers not to think its OK to do these things. Same with tenderpreneurs, theft etc. We need a leader and a party that condemns breaking the law unreservedly, and the cANCer is too sick to the core to do this
