Johannesburg - South Africa has signed two agreements with Senegal - a memorandum of understanding on agriculture, and a co-operation agreement on arts and culture, President Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday.

"The signing of these two agreements demonstrates that both people-to-people relations, as well as agro-industrial partnership for development are important to our relationship," he said.

Zuma arrived in Senegal's capital, Dakar, for a two-day visit earlier on Tuesday.

In his speech he said the visit had taken relations between the countries to a higher level.

"We have certainly established the necessary foundation for accelerated bilateral co-operation," he said.

"We have also agreed on the need to unlock the economic potential between our two countries through economic co-operation that includes industrial and technological partnership, and the transfer of skills."

South African exports to Senegal include vegetable and mineral products, plastics and rubber, machinery and mechanical appliances, prepared foodstuff, beverages, and footwear.

South Africa imports fish [frozen and chilled], wood, textiles, cultural artefacts, works of art, and jewellery.

Zuma was accompanied by a number of Cabinet ministers, including Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson and Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile.
