Bangui - A South African soldier survived the bloodbath in the Central African Republic (CAR) by hiding out in a local church for four days.

Experienced parabat Lance Corporal Makwenkwe Tats, 49, was separated from the rest of troops last Friday after they walked into a trap, resulting in fierce fighting that killed 13 and wounded 46 of his colleagues, reported Beeld.

Tats, from Thaba Nchu, was part of a reconnaissance group which walked into a rebel trap about 10km outside of Bangui. The South African group managed to fight back successfully, although the situation was described as “chaotic”. Tats was reported missing afterwards

Army spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said: “The local population took pity on Tats as they realised he was in trouble. But because the situation was so dangerous with armed rebels everywhere, the only place where they could hide him was in the local little church,” said Mabanga.

Tats hid there for four days while his colleagues looked for him and a specialist team was even flown in from Pretoria to determine if a burnt body was his.

On Tuesday morning, Tats managed to call the army to say he was safe, and his unit went to fetch him.

Mabanga said Tats was unharmed but in shock.
