Johannesburg - The South African government welcomed the reported decision by Libya to dismantle its weapons of mass destruction programme and to allow unconditional access for inspections, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.
Spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said this move would create conditions for Africa to achieve its vision of being free of such weapons.
He said the decision was in line with policies of the African Union (AU).
"At the same time we reiterate, and support the call by the United Nations, that sanctions against Libya be removed by the international community," Mamoepa said.
