SA woman spared jail for mid-air grope

2011-11-29 10:28

Cape Town - A South African woman who admitted being drunk on a plane and groping a male air steward was spared jail on Monday after a London court was told of her battle against alcoholism.

The Cape Times newspaper reported on Tuesday that Katherine Goldberg, 25, was on a Virgin Atlantic flight from Johannesburg to London when she drank nearly 500ml of whisky and then made "strong sexual advances" to the man, grabbing his groin.

Last month, the woman, who is a teacher, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and being drunk on a plane following the August flight, but magistrates decided the case was too serious to be dealt with in a lower court.

As part of her sentencing, she was fined £1 500 (R19 500) for being drunk on an aircraft and handed an 11 month community order, to be supervised by the probation service, for the sexual assault. In addition, she is to pay costs and do 80 hours' unpaid work.

Prosecutor James O'Connell said her behaviour had been progressively worse during the course of the overnight flight.

He said: "When it became apparent that she was under the influence of alcohol, a member of the cabin crew moved her to the galley area and supervised her in his care.

"However her antics changed to a more sexual nature, making suggestions to him. She then sat on his lap and grabbed hold of his genitalia through his trousers."

1500 pounds is a bit steep, in sa you get less than that for somthing far more serious,

      Deon - 2011-11-29 11:53

Which is exactly why crime and offence stats are much, much lower in Europe than in SA!

      Dank - 2011-11-29 15:58

Having SA in mind - fines wont deter crime, it will only put more criminals on the streets. Unless of course the increase in fines actually goes to the expansion of prisons(or education for that matter) instead of the ANC's coffers.

      Matt - 2011-11-29 17:10

Sounds like my type of women.

      goyougoodthing - 2011-11-30 06:49

What is wrong with the Steward? :-)

      Modefan - 2011-11-30 07:40

He should've just porked her, to teach her a lesson! It's the christian thing to do :-)

  • Go - 2011-11-29 10:36

and she is a teacher ??? Hope she never teaches at my kids schools

      jordaanjean - 2011-11-29 11:12

I fully agree, she admits to have a drinking problem. She also does not care at all to be publicly indecent and grope strangers. What stops her from taking the innocence of a young school boy. Abusing children ? If only for the fact that she has a drinking problem she should not be allowed to teach any more.

      May - 2011-11-29 17:21

This holier than I attitude gives me a pain!!!

      Thandi - 2011-11-29 20:42

Wow, her parents must be really proud of her (tic).

  • Maai - 2011-11-29 10:40

What kind of "man" complains about a woman grabbing his genitalia?

      Go - 2011-11-29 10:46

maybe she squeezed too hard lol

      Hennie - 2011-11-29 11:05

      a married one.

      Mlungisi - 2011-11-29 11:07

Well that's so ignorant......everyone has got a right to complain if they don't like to be touched at work. Real men say no bcos they assess the situations and conclude it's not the right time and place. Again the woman was drunk, so you'll never know what's going on, u enjoy the touch the next thing ur ass is being sued.

      jordaanjean - 2011-11-29 11:13

easy, a married man. A man with morals, a man that knows if he actually "does" her while on duty he will get fired. A man with ethics that does not take advantage of a drunk woman. A professional employed by Virgin Atlantic ? The list is endless.

      Maai - 2011-11-29 11:50

Well, I would have taken the opportunity to have joined the Mile High Club.

      Barefoot - 2011-11-29 11:50

What type of person asks such a stupid question?

      Maai - 2011-11-29 11:54

@Barefoot a red blooded heterosexual normal man.

      nadia.chotu - 2011-11-29 12:02

      LMAO!!!

      Sharon - 2011-11-29 12:35

A decent one..........u guys complain when women complain about being gropped ...now u ask this stupid question ......make up ur flippen mind where u stand. Any sexual advance is not correct unless it is within a marital home or a couple who stays together and yes u couls get sued if u like it to much

      satanslord - 2011-11-29 13:12

      A real man.

      Samuel - 2011-11-29 15:41

She is not bad looking, He must be gay

      zmbova - 2011-11-29 15:50

      andreviljoenjoubert - 2011-11-30 08:50

It was Virgin Atlantic after all.

      nshimba - 2011-11-30 09:05

thats just plain ignorance,so u think all guys are perverts who will allow such a disgraceful act in public?thats a sexual offense.

  • jordaanjean - 2011-11-29 10:42

How sexist. If this was a man in an intoxicated state grabbing a woman's groin, he would have been put in jail al left to rot. You would have had all the "feminists / sexist" groups up in arms. She is a sex PEST, and should be treated as that. Will she be allowed to continue teaching ? what !!! I would not trust my child in the care of this person. Another example of how screwed the justice system is all over the world. Woman insist on being treated as "equals", ha what ever.

      Barefoot - 2011-11-29 11:48

well said double standards, so it's fine for women to do wateva what she got compared to what a man would have got is just a slap on the wrist

      Gail - 2011-11-29 22:55

Sadly men who behave in this way towards women in this country do not get put in jail and left to rot and in general even their names are withheld to protect the victim. I totally agree it's sexist because this fine is heavier than most men get handed in SA and why we have so much rape and so little respect for women and children. She must be British as had she been South African they would have sent her home on the next flight once she sobered up.

  • rmathee - 2011-11-29 10:44

bwahahaha should have just joined the mile high club like my friend Riaan always says... Shocker that he would complain or lay a charge even.. she must of been a minger..

      TheSlip - 2011-11-29 11:24

      must've = must HAVE*

      NuttyZA - 2011-11-29 12:12

Sputnik101... well out of 10, I'd give her one!!!

  • Hallo - 2011-11-29 10:50

Had this been a drunken male copping a feel he would have been crucified and all the feministas would have been up in arms.

      jordaanjean - 2011-11-29 11:10

LOL.... that is exactly what I said.. hehe.. Glad to see I am not the only one that sees the double standards in this.

      Hallo - 2011-11-29 11:53

We have lost the plot gentlemen.

      Sharon - 2011-11-30 08:19

That`s wot i said "she did the crime do the time" as men have to do. I don`t have any compassion with men or women who think it is okay to do such things, no way would I let her teach my son

  • dduplessis - 2011-11-29 10:55

God, I wish I was sitting next to her on that flight....hahahahaha.

      Greg - 2011-11-29 11:56

@dduplessis.That would have been funny if you had left God's name out of it.

      Peter - 2011-11-29 22:18

Christ, I wish I had been sitting next to her on that flight....

      Gareth - 2011-11-30 01:15

@Peter... TOO FUNNY!! Thanks that made me laugh, its too easy to make fun of sensitive people.

  • Nishan - 2011-11-29 11:01

I'm adding her as a friend on Facebook!! lol

  • Mlungisi - 2011-11-29 11:08

She's young to have this kind of drama......what the hell is wrong with her? She must just get a life.........alcohol free ofcos

  • laren.reddy - 2011-11-29 11:30

    Give that lass a Bells!

      Nishan - 2011-11-29 11:45

      LOL. Brilliant!

      Hamrammr - 2011-11-29 12:05

      Or is it balls?

  • Angela - 2011-11-29 12:00

"When it became apparent that she was under the influence of alcohol, a member of the cabin crew moved her to the galley area". SOMEONE gave her the 500ml of Whiskey, what did they think would happen!?

      Mike - 2011-11-30 07:12

Agreed Angela, aside from the safety aspect there are few things as annoying as an intoxicated person on a plane. Generally the cabin crew will limit the alcohol intake of the passengers but some still manage to slip throught the net I guess. The unruly passenger is generally removed to the galley area in order to minimise the disruption to the passengers around them.

  • Spiral - 2011-11-29 12:02

hahahahaha! that must've been an interesting flight :D!

  • felican - 2011-11-29 12:04

Poor guy.... But then I blame the service for allowing passengers to get drunk in the first place; or boarding when under the influence..

  • arno.west - 2011-11-29 12:09

she could do that to me and i'll pay her for it, this sounds like a case for Loslyf's letters!

  • Maai - 2011-11-29 12:11

Perhaps she thought he was an SA government minister and was just trying to scan his bag?

  • Ramudzuli Muthuphei - 2011-11-29 12:33

SHE SHOULD TRY THAT ON OUR OWN SPORTS MINISTER

  • satanslord - 2011-11-29 13:23

When they moved her to the galley area, she knew that she was in trouble.I think that's the reason she did that, thinking that she she might get away from the mess she she got herself into. She was WRONG.

  • gary.mahlangu - 2011-11-29 13:40

She is pretty good looking... i would've have kept that to myself and maybe joined the mile high club. That steward is going to be mocked by his mates. If he was one of my mates i would have a field day with him. I'm not saying what she did was right, but come on dude going public about it is a bit excessive... why di you allow her to sit in your lap in the first place pal.

  • Ebrahim - 2011-11-29 15:03

Mentioned it before and I say it again, ban alcahol on all flights

  • Bryan - 2011-11-29 15:39

I actually think this story is pretty funny! If any of the would be prudes reading this have never got a bit out of hand after a few too many then rather not judge unless you have been there before... Come now people, lighten up FFS..!!!

      Hallo - 2011-11-29 16:10

So you grope ppl when you are drunk and think its ok? You degenerate.

      Kosie - 2011-11-29 16:15

      yes i do

      Mike - 2011-11-30 07:16

@Bryan, I think you might look upon this differently if it was your GF/wife that was being groped by some drunk guy. Sexual assault is no laughing matter and being intoxicated is no excuse.

      Bryan - 2011-11-30 09:20

Sexual assualt seems to be one of todays favorite buzz words.., @Hallo..put a picture on your profile or are you that butt ugly that you will scare people away( clearly never had anyone come onto you hey?) get a life..!!@Mike.. Only heard one side of the story.. if it was my girlfriend I would give the bloke a slap around the head and leave it at that....

      Mike - 2011-11-30 10:11

@Bryan, it is quite sad to see that you think someone hitting on you and sexually assaulting you are the same thing. How is slapping the guy around the head going to achieve anything? What about women who do not have such an upstanding boyfriend/husband as yourself to protect them - is it ok for them to be assaulted? The sexual assault buzz word as you put it is a sign of improving attitudes towards sex based crime but from your response it is easy to see that you have been left behind.

      Pixie86 - 2011-11-30 14:46

if a man had groped a woman, you wouldn't think it was funny.

  • johnkk - 2011-11-29 15:41

One more for the 'MILE HIGH CLUB'.....

  • lvpeterson - 2011-11-29 15:47

she just gropes , and she gets fined that much money, there are child rapists who walks free..... am i missing something

      Mike - 2011-11-30 07:26

Yes you are lvpeterson, she admitted guilt and there was no doubt about her guilt in any case. I have not heard of a single rapist that admitted guilt getting less than this but I will happily apologise if you can show me such a case.

  • kardollie - 2011-11-29 15:47

    haai,los my ballas.

  • Peter - 2011-11-29 17:11

I wish i was the air steward

  • Pur - 2011-11-29 17:57

£1500 fine for being drunk on a flight! That's heavy. Getting a few drinks down is the only way you can get any sleep in those tiny seats with no leg-room. Relatively speaking, she only got a slap on the wrist for the groping. So now we know. If you have to grope someone, make sure you do it when you are stone-cold sober, then, after you are rejected, drink yourself to sleep.

  • Thandi - 2011-11-29 20:37

Yet another situation where a South African who is used to the general embracing of lawlessness and being able to blag their way out of it - an attitude that just doesn't work in a civilised environment.

  • Heinrich - 2011-11-29 21:04

So romantic, this frantic Virgin Atlantic antic. hic...

  • Richard - 2011-11-30 00:45

HEY...FIRST TIME EVER I HAVE WANTED TO BE AN AIRLINE STEWARD....

  • Silvana - 2011-11-30 05:49

LOL I wish I was on that flight.

  • Richard - 2011-11-30 09:49

I think one Jayzed said that leaving a sexually frustrated woman unsatisfied is worse than rape. But nookie with a drunk stranger is asking for BIG trouble. Another 250 ml Jonnie Walker might have been the Dr Murry solution. But this young woman will probably never wack another dop at all in her life and surely never on a trans-Atlantic flight. H2O is best.
