Johannesburg - The timing of the appointment of Snuki Zikalala as managing director of news and current affairs at the South African Broadcasting Corporation a day after the African National Congress's election victory was no accident, the Democratic Alliance said in a statement on Saturday.
Referring to Zikalala's previous tenure at the SABC, the statement said that both Allister Sparks and Max du Plessis had described his influence as "damaging" and "destructive".
"With the election over and done with, the ANC clearly calculates it can absorb the shock waves sent out by this appointment," the DA said.
The DA said that the SABC's new board consisted of ANC appointees and that the recommendation to appoint Zikalala is said to have come from the board and management.
"The SABC is set to become Mbeki's broadcaster outright," the statement said.
It was announced on Friday by the SABC that ministry of labour spokesperson Snuki Zikalala had been appointed as managing director of SABC news and current affairs.
