Johannesburg - The SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) is sacrificing human
rights for political bigwigs, the Afrikanerbond says.
"The SAHRC is only too willing to be politically expedient... and is
only too willing to sacrifice human rights when it suits high profile political
individuals," said secretary Jan Bosman.
He was referring to the hate speech case against ANC Youth League leader
Julius Malema.
On May 15, acting Judge Leon Halgryn ruled in the High Court of Johannesbug
that the singing of song "dubula ibhunu" was an incitement to murder.
"The SAHRC was caught off guard by the ruling...[and] has allowed
itself to be led by the nose by Mr Malema and his legal team.
"After more than a year since the first complaint was lodged, the
SAHRC...is simply unable to adhere to its constitutional duties and to enforce
human rights," said Bosman.
The Afrikanerbond said human rights were being used as a "political
football".
"The perception that this constitutional institution has become a
political tool has now become evident with the genial and affable treatment
afforded to Mr Malema and the ANC, thereby failing its constitutional
duty," said Bosman.
Commission spokesperson Vincent Moaga was not immediately available for
comment.
