Johannesburg - The bodies of the five soldiers who died when a helicopter crashed in the Kruger National Park will be handed over to their families on Tuesday, the SA National Defence Force said.

Spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said the ceremony would take place at 10:00 at the Waterkloof Air Force Base in Pretoria.

Senior government officials were expected to attend the ceremony.

"The memorial service will take place on Thursday," said Mabanga.

Captain Jacobus Andries van Rensburg, Captain MP Chabalala, Sergeant Paulus Shongela Ndishishi, Sergeant GP Ruiters and Lance Corporal Bheki Petros Cele were conducting a scheduled aerial patrol when their helicopter crashed.

On 30 March around 19:00 the SA Air Force Agusta A109 light utility helicopter crashed killing the five people on board. It was patrolling the Kruger National Park as part of an anti-rhino poaching operation.

The SANDF said a preliminary investigation was underway to establish the sequence of events that led to the crash.
